Scholar
Scholar is the designation Sunny gives an educated fellow slave in his First Nightmare. His knowledge helps four survivors navigate after the Mountain King's attack, but his cultivated kindness conceals a willingness to sacrifice Sunny. Hero reverses the proposal and leaves Scholar bleeding in the Tyrant's path instead. (Chapters 3–12)
Biography
Knowledge, escape, and betrayal
Scholar enters the story warning Shifty away from poisonous Bloodbane berries and explaining why they mark places where human blood has been spilled. When a dead slave transforms into a Mountain King's Larva, he identifies the danger in their tangled chain and then helps hold it taut while Sunny strangles the creature. Sunny frees him afterward, and Scholar joins the survivors rather than remaining with the doomed caravan. (Chapters 3–5)
His learning becomes the group's main navigational asset. Scholar knows that an old pilgrim path once crossed the mountain peak and reasons that its remaining section may reconnect them with the Imperial road beyond the rockfall. He also evaluates whether the Mountain King may stop after feeding and contributes to the plan that sends a chained wagon over the precipice. The information is useful even when his conclusions about the Tyrant prove dangerously optimistic. (Chapters 5–9)
Sunny distrusts Scholar's gentle manner from the beginning and recognizes the calculation beneath his advice. Scholar discourages Shifty from killing Sunny too early because the boy may be useful later. After the poisoned Shifty falls and the Mountain King follows, Scholar proposes cutting Sunny, dragging him down the path, and leaving him as bait. He presents the murder as saving two lives and a sacrifice the gods will reward. (Chapters 9–11)
Hero asks why the already dying Scholar should not be used instead. The soldier ultimately cuts him, drags him away, and leaves him screaming for the approaching Mountain King, then returns alone. Scholar was already weakened by Bloodbane Sunny had put in everyone's water except his own, but the immediate cause of his death is Hero's deliberate choice. No name or history survives beyond the role Sunny assigned him. (Chapters 12–13)
Appearance and personality
Scholar is a tall, lean man in his forties, strangely handsome and dignified enough to look like an educated gentleman despite his enslavement. The climb and poison later leave him sweating, bloodshot, pale, and near death. He wears scavenged fur and carries supplies and a weapon recovered from the destroyed caravan, but is not described as an experienced fighter. (Chapters 3 and 9–12)
He speaks gently, smiles apologetically, and possesses genuine practical knowledge. Sunny nevertheless reads the benevolent performance as the camouflage of a predator rather than compassion. Scholar's mask slips when he responds to Shifty's death by noting the convenience of already having removed most of the dead man's supplies. His final argument uses religion and arithmetic to make murder sound virtuous, confirming the cynicism Sunny expected. (Chapters 3–12)
Abilities and Aspect
Scholar is mundane and demonstrates no Aspect, awakened soul core, sorcery, Memory, or supernatural sense. His principal ability is education: he recognizes Bloodbane, knows the mountain's historical routes, reasons about pursuit, and can explain a plan persuasively. His knowledge is incomplete, particularly concerning the blind Tyrant and Sunny's motives, and it cannot compensate for his poisoning or physical decline. (Chapters 3 and 5–12)
He helps restrain a larva, push a wagon, climb, and carry scavenged equipment, showing ordinary physical competence before the Bloodbane takes hold. There is no evidence that “Scholar” is a profession, title, or true name rather than Sunny's descriptive label. The corpus never explains why he became a slave or what education he received before the caravan. (Chapters 3–12)
Relationships
Sunny
Scholar's advice saves Sunny from some environmental mistakes, and his labor is essential to the early escape. Both men nevertheless view the other instrumentally. Scholar preserves Sunny as a future resource and later nominates him as bait; Sunny anticipates betrayal and poisons him before it becomes overt. Sunny neither orders nor prevents Hero's final choice, then feels disturbed rather than triumphant when Scholar's screams echo across the mountain. (Chapters 3–13)
Shifty and Hero
Scholar repeatedly addresses Shifty as a friend, warns him about poison, and moderates his aggression, but his response to Shifty's corpse exposes little grief. He assumes his argument will convince Hero to sacrifice the weakest survivor. Instead, Hero applies the same logic to Scholar, whose failing body makes him the more efficient bait, and personally carries out the killing. (Chapters 3 and 9–12)
Items
Scholar owns no named Memory or singular item. He scavenges warm clothing, a weapon, food, water, and a rucksack from the ruined caravan. Hero later sorts through that rucksack after abandoning him and takes what is useful. Nothing associated with Scholar is shown persisting beyond the First Nightmare. (Chapters 5–12)
