Julius

Julius is an Awakened scholar, wilderness-survival instructor, and Dream Realm historian who becomes Sunny's first academic mentor. His unfashionable Academy course supplies skills that repeatedly save Sunny's life, while his appetite for rigorous evidence turns Sunny's field observations into influential public research. In later life, Julius helps design education for children living permanently in the Dream Realm.

Biography

Sunny's wilderness instructor

Julius meets Sunny in an otherwise empty Wilderness Survival classroom. The lively old Awakened complains that most Sleepers prefer weapons training, then becomes ecstatic when Sunny commits all four preparatory weeks to his course on Jet's advice. He teaches with patience, depth, and relentless enthusiasm, ranging across fire, shelter, swimming, celestial navigation, monster cookery, dead languages, runic grammar, and the strange environmental laws of the Dream Realm. The course immediately proves consequential. Sunny can desalinate water, make food, recognize suspicious ecosystems, navigate, and reason from principles rather than memorize isolated procedures. He later credits Julius with teaching him to swim—a simple skill without which he would have drowned minutes after entering the Forgotten Shore. Julius cannot anticipate every danger or answer every ethical question, but he gives an impoverished student a framework for surviving unknown conditions independently. The Forgotten Shore report

After returning as an Awakened, Sunny writes an extensive exploration report specifically with Julius's research interests in mind. It documents geography, creatures, ruins, languages, and theories while omitting Sunny's most dangerous secrets. Julius welcomes him with a hug, remembers the lone student despite decades of teaching, and reacts to the report as both proud mentor and excited scholar. He identifies its academic value while honestly warning that the rough field document needs editorial work before publication. (Chapters 363 and 370–371)

Their discussion turns the survival teacher into a research collaborator. Julius explains publication, Citadel selection, the six known gods, shifting divine titles, and fragmentary human knowledge of daemons. Sunny continues to use his lessons when translating True Names and ancient descriptions, and thinks of returning with unfamiliar scripts. A mentor erased from his student

Sunny's later discoveries repeatedly develop from Julius's foundation, including his attention to runic nuance, divine history, and field documentation. During and after the Tomb of Ariel, he recalls the teacher while comparing ancient practices and organizing what he has learned. These are references to Julius's scholarship; they do not establish that Julius personally knows the Tomb's secrets or participates in Sunny's Nightmares. (Chapters 1254, 1306, and 1594–1595)

When Sunny becomes Fateless, the world loses its memories of him. Julius therefore no longer remembers his former student even though Sunny remembers every lesson and regards the bond as formative. The erasure changes their personal relationship without undoing the knowledge Sunny acquired or the earlier report's contribution. Years later, Sunny can enter the Academy unseen and revisit the classroom as a private memorial to a teacher who no longer knows whom he taught. (Chapters 1594–1595 and 2563–2564)

Building education in Bastion

Julius considers retirement when younger generations arrive with more childhood preparation and his old survival classes draw few students. Instead, the migration to the Dream Realm creates a larger task. He moves much of his life to Bastion and leads academics designing an education system for youths already living there, balancing survival competence with the preservation of Earth's history and culture for children who may be born after the realms fully merge. The work reconnects his specialized knowledge to humanity's changing needs. Julius's wife helps settle refugees, while he coordinates institutions and colleagues across realms and still maintains an office at the NQSC Academy. A later family conversation identifies him as one of Ling's tutors, although a separate history specialist has been added because Julius is elderly and not an expert in every subject. Sunny anonymously leaves Julius a journal titled the Exploration Report on Everything and a note from a forgotten former student. The report's ability to fill independent gaps in existing research convinces him that “Nobody” is a serious scholar, though Fateless prevents him from recognizing the author's identity. His reputation helps the document receive immediate attention, while its content sparks public debate and new lines of research across both worlds. He acts as custodian and publisher, not author; the discoveries belong to Sunny, while Julius's contribution is recognizing their importance and refusing to lock world-changing knowledge behind academic or institutional barriers. Appearance and personality

Julius is a lively elderly man with messy grey hair, absentminded eyes, and large bushy eyebrows expressive enough to seem independently animated. Age does not make him sedate: he walks energetically, hums, embraces returning students, and becomes almost childlike when presented with a new discovery. By his later years he considers retirement, but meaningful work in Bastion restores his excitement rather than diminishing it. (Chapters 25, 371, and 2564–2565)

He is enthusiastic, patient, intellectually curious, and comically opinionated. Julius disparages combat-focused “brutes,” gossips about Jet before remembering that he should not, and maintains rivalries with scholars he considers hacks. Beneath the eccentricity is methodological seriousness: he teaches underlying principles, values original-language evidence, distinguishes consensus from speculation, and subjects even an astonishing gift from an unknown intruder to critical scrutiny. His deepest commitments are practical human survival and open knowledge. Julius is delighted by discoveries, but he measures them by lives saved, theories corrected, and students made capable. He also adapts when the world changes, accepting that education must preserve Earth culture while preparing children for a Dream Realm future. Abilities and Aspect

Awakened physiology

Julius is explicitly an Awakened and has lived long enough to teach generations of Sleepers. The corpus does not disclose his Aspect name, Aspect rank, Flaw, combat Ability, or soul-core mechanics. His evaluation of both Forgotten Shore reports distinguishes observation, interpretation, and publishable evidence. Teaching and institution building

Julius tailors instruction to an uneducated but intensely motivated student, combines theory with punishing practical simulation, and later scales those instincts into curriculum design for an entire Domain. The story does not credit him with sole authorship of Bastion's system; he leads a larger institutional effort shaped by families, other scholars, and humanity's migration. Relationships

Sunny

Julius is Sunny's first teacher and one of the few adults to value his curiosity without demanding status or allegiance. Sunny returns that respect by preparing reports Julius can use and grounding later scholarship in his lessons. Fateless erases Julius's memory of their bond, but Sunny anonymously entrusts him with the final Report because he still trusts the teacher's judgment and commitment to sharing knowledge. Jet

Jet recommends Julius's subject without naming him, indirectly placing Sunny in his classroom. Julius knows her reputation and explains that her attacks target soul cores, but he also indulges in exaggerated gossip about her temperament and prospects before stopping himself. Their direct friendship is not shown; their meaningful connection is the complementary advice and instruction that prepare Sunny for survival. (Chapter 25)

Family, students, and colleagues

Julius has a wife working with Bastion's refugees, leads a team of academics, spars verbally with rival scholars, and teaches many generations of Sleepers. By the late corpus he also tutors Effie's son Ling, though he is not the boy's only teacher.
