Baal

Baal is L'Infernal's highest-ranking demon and one of the ancient beings who preserve the Black King's dream. His demonic office and his work for Day make him a custodian of balance rather than a simple embodiment of indiscriminate evil.

Biography

A demon king contains a widening war

As L'Infernal prepares for war with the Giants, Baal watches Yeon-woo instead of acting impulsively, since Typhon's faction is strong enough to make the conflict fatal even for the highest demons. He also monitors Agares, whose fixation on Yeon-woo repeatedly threatens to complicate L'Infernal's position. When hostilities spread toward other societies, Baal asks Yeon-woo to keep the destruction contained and privately invites him to manage Agares, showing that Baal protects his faction through restraint as well as force. The last guardian of Day names a successor

Baal and Metatron are survivors from earlier cycles of the Black King's dream, but each suppression consumes more of the power they once used to stand above universes. Although Baal's remaining darkness still supports L'Infernal and makes him a leader among transcendents, he is nearing collapse. He and Metatron therefore wait until the Tower falls before accepting Jeong-woo as Day's successor, pass their duty to him, and disappear from the role they maintained through repeated wheels. An old ally recognizes a visitor from the future

When Yeon-woo enters an earlier period of the rewound wheel, Baal recognizes that the conflict between the Heavenly Demon and Black King has ended in Yeon-woo's future. He descends to the Martial King's territory, suppresses would-be troublemakers with his presence, and accepts Yeon-woo's invitation to speak as an old friend of Uranos rather than a remote ruler. This encounter is Baal's latest direct appearance, but it occurs before his later exhaustion and succession in the main chronology. (Chapters 850, 853–854)

Appearance and personality

Baal manifests with black demonic energy sparking around a face set in a ferocious grin. His expressions can look threatening even when he is maintaining order, while quieter details—such as setting aside a strawberry cake to answer Yeon-woo—give his ancient dignity a dry, playful edge. He is charismatic, watchful, and economical in intervention. Baal tolerates Agares' excesses only within limits, measures the systemic consequences of divine conflict, and can joke at another demon's expense without losing sight of L'Infernal's survival. His willingness to serve Day also shows that his decisions are not reducible to the moral label attached to a demonic society. (Chapters 449–468, 626, 689)

Abilities and powers

Primordial dark power

At his prime, Baal possessed darkness described as capable of destroying a universe. Repeated cycles spent preserving the Black King's sleep steadily exhaust that reserve; by the final cycle, only a fraction remains. Even that fraction is sufficient for him to lead L'Infernal and stand above most transcendents, but the decline is cumulative, and neither rest nor ordinary combat replenishes what his duty to Day consumes. Authority over L'Infernal

Baal rules L'Infernal through overwhelming charisma and can observe lower-world conflicts, exchange system messages, discipline members, and coordinate society-wide policy. His authority does not remove the laws of causality that constrain celestial intervention, so he often watches, negotiates, or sends an envoy instead of descending personally. In the earlier wheel he can still manifest imposing demonic power, while his later succession leaves Agares leading a markedly different L'Infernal. (Chapters 449–468, 626, 759, 794, 853)

Relationships

• Metatron: Metatron is Baal's counterpart in maintaining Day. They endure the same repeated depletion and jointly wait for Jeong-woo to succeed them. (Chapters 689–693, 741–748)
• Jeong-woo: Baal helps designate Jeong-woo as Day's successor when the old guardians can no longer sustain the recurring conflict. (Chapters 741, 748)
• Agares: Baal commands and disciplines Agares while relying on his strength, eventually leaving behind a society that Agares rules by a far more violent method. (Chapters 206, 457–468, 626, 759)
• Yeon-woo: Baal first evaluates Yeon-woo as a destabilizing force, later coordinates with him, and recognizes him when he arrives from a future wheel. (Chapters 449, 626, 850–854)
