Agares

Agares is the Grand Demon Duke of the East, a high-ranking demon whose consuming interest in Jeong-woo carries over to Jeong-woo's twin, Yeon-woo. His initial attempts to claim the brothers and Sesha make him an enemy, but that same obsessive temperament eventually drives him to break with his own society, support Yeon-woo's campaigns, and fight beside the family he once threatened.

Biography

Rejection, descent, and the attempt to claim Jeong-woo's family

Agares first answered Jeong-woo's study of demonic magic, taught him, and repeatedly offered a contract that would turn the Dragon Human into either his subordinate or disciple. Jeong-woo recognized that Agares desired his Draconic Factors and Perfect Adaptability, so he refused even when dying. Agares offered to cure him, empower his revenge, and personally absorb the contract's law-of-causality cost, but pride and obsession could not overcome Jeong-woo's determination to remain himself. The final refusal left Agares treating the dead man's surviving bloodline as something he was owed. (Chapter 203)

When Brahm's summoning let his avatar reach the twenty-third floor, Agares erased a floor-threatening tornado with a gesture, dismissed Kindred's borrowed Monkey King power, and demanded Sesha because she was Jeong-woo's child. He broke Brahm's seals, injured him, and nearly swallowed the girl before Yeon-woo intervened. Agares then offered Yeon-woo the same bargain he had offered Jeong-woo—and proposed Sesha as an even richer sacrifice—only to receive the same rejection. Hermes' answering descent prevented Agares from simply forcing Yeon-woo's soul into submission, turning the attempted acquisition into a clash he could not finish on his own terms. From predatory patron to chosen ally

Agares continued to press power on Yeon-woo through messages and blessings, treating other divine claimants as rivals and Yeon-woo as his possession. The relationship changed when Yeon-woo became strong enough to dictate terms. Asked to produce a Fruit of Evil, Agares first manifested Wicked Devil in anger, but Yeon-woo tore it apart and threatened to end their alliance. Rather than retaliate, Agares silenced L'Infernal's objections, temporarily left the society with the East Demon Army, and delivered the requested fruit. His choice preserved his access to Yeon-woo at the cost of publicly subordinating demonic pride to his own desire. (Chapters 250, 509–511)

That decision made Agares a practical member of Yeon-woo's coalition. He used Wicked Devil to amplify the half-giants' aggression, stood with Fenrir and Yeon-woo's forces against hostile envoys, and later took command of L'Infernal. In the final conflict he brought his demon army against the Perished Gods and refused to abandon the battlefield even when enemy forces attacked L'Infernal's holy territory, ruling his frightened subordinates through threats and the East Demon Army's personal loyalty. His fixation remained unmistakable, but it now produced military commitment rather than another attempt to seize Yeon-woo by force. (Chapters 514–516, 751, 759)

An unruly place in the surviving community

After the Tower's fall, Agares led L'Infernal in a far less orderly fashion than Baal had. When administrative responsibility became intolerable, he appointed Dantalion as successor and walked away, choosing freedom and the people gathered around Yeon-woo over the institution he had inherited. Even as memory of Yeon-woo faded, Agares was one of the few beings who sensed that someone important was missing; he eventually joined the others whose recognition helped Yeon-woo recover his distinct existence. His later conduct makes the change visible without making him conventional. Agares adopts the form of a small child, quarrels with Fenrir for Yeon-woo's attention, and disrupts Yeon-woo and Edora's wedding simply because marriage might leave Yeon-woo less time to play with them. Baal and L'Infernal's demon kings must carry him away. The scene preserves his volatility and possessiveness, but their consequence has shifted from threatening Sesha's life to embarrassing his allies at a family celebration. (Chapters 857–858)

Appearance and personality

Agares' primary manifested form is strikingly beautiful and androgynous, framed by dozens of black wings and violent demonic energy. When he releases more power, the number of wings can expand dramatically and the darkness around him takes on a predatory presence. In later peaceful scenes he deliberately appears as an exceptionally pretty child of about five, a form whose harmless surface contrasts with his status and the danger he can still release. He is possessive, theatrical, quick to violence, and unusually willing to humiliate himself when his obsession is engaged. Agares calls people and armies “his,” threatens subordinates into obedience, and laughs hardest when Yeon-woo does something reckless enough to surprise transcendents. Yet he is not merely impulsive: his apparent break with L'Infernal advances a prepared scheme, and he can read an enemy's strategic pressure during a chaotic war. His loyalty is therefore unstable in manner but durable in practice once he decides someone belongs within his chosen circle. (Chapters 510, 755, 759)

Abilities and powers

Demonic authority, avatars, and descent

As L'Infernal's second-ranked Demon King and commander of the East Demon Army, Agares possesses demonic energy aligned with madness and destruction. Even an avatar on a lower floor can erase a massive tornado, overwhelm a borrowed divine possession before it reaches him, regenerate a severed hand, break weakened divine-iron seals, and distort a stage's natural laws during combat. His true-scale presence is far larger than the humanoid avatar: Yeon-woo perceives an immense body behind the darkness whose movements bring ice, wind, fire, and light into destructive cycles. Descent is not unrestricted. Agares reaches the lower floors through a summoning contract and sacrifice, appears as an avatar rather than freely placing his complete existence there, and must contend with other gods who use the same opening. Hermes' descent and Athena's support prevent him from simply taking Yeon-woo, demonstrating that rank does not eliminate the law-of-causality costs, stage limits, or opposition created by equivalent higher beings. Darkness, wings, and Wicked Devil

Agares shapes darkness into tendrils, barriers, swallowing masses, and attacks that can touch or bind a target's soul. His wings can disperse an attack capable of destroying a floor, while the demonic storm around him pressures lesser beings before he strikes. Wicked Devil condenses his domains of madness and destruction into a beast-like force or a transferable buff. Applied to allies, it intensifies aggression and releases suppressed fighting instinct; applied carelessly, that same mechanism can overwhelm judgment rather than provide measured control. The skill's power depends on the recipient and on Agares' own investment. He strengthens the portion granted to Yeon-woo and later spreads it over the half-giants, but Yeon-woo eventually becomes capable of tearing Agares' manifestation apart with Sword Thunder. Wicked Devil is therefore a powerful emotional and combat amplifier, not an irresistible command or proof that its recipient equals Agares' full power. (Chapters 250, 510, 516)

Contracts, Channels, and command

Agares can teach demonic magic, establish Channels, offer power through contracts, and lend Demonic Factors to a compatible mortal. His proposal to Jeong-woo shows the breadth of the exchange: healing, revenge, rank after death, and protection from some law-of-causality costs were possible, but accepting would have bound Jeong-woo's identity and freedom to the demon. This is why both brothers reject the bargain even when its immediate benefits are immense. (Chapters 196, 203–204)

As a commander, Agares couples personal terror with the East Demon Army's loyalty. He can suppress resistance within L'Infernal, mobilize a large portion of its forces when he leaves, and keep demon kings fighting while their own holy territory is threatened. This discipline is coercive rather than stable administration: after centuries as leader, he abandons the paperwork, appoints Dantalion, and departs, exposing the difference between battlefield control and sustained governance. Relationships

• Jeong-woo: Agares teaches Jeong-woo demonic magic and becomes obsessed when he repeatedly refuses a contract. That rejection shapes Agares' later interest in Jeong-woo's daughter, twin, and recovered soul.
• Yeon-woo: Their relationship begins with Agares trying to claim Yeon-woo or trade power for Sesha. Yeon-woo's growth reverses the balance, and Agares becomes a volatile but persistent ally who supplies resources, armies, and personal support.
• Hermes: Hermes answers Yeon-woo's summoning and directly blocks Agares' first attempt to take him. They later operate within the same broad coalition despite representing opposing divine and demonic interests.
• Athena: Athena helps Yeon-woo withstand Agares' pressure during the twenty-third-floor confrontation. Much later, she and Agares are among the few transcendents who sense the gap left when the world forgets Yeon-woo.
• Fenrir: Fenrir is Agares' frequent rival for Yeon-woo's attention and his battlefield companion. Their bickering hides genuine coordination: they defend Yeon-woo together, fight the Perished Gods, and later cause trouble at his wedding as a pair.
