Harambe

Harambe is the proud leader of a forest pack and Brock’s father. His decision to entrust Brock to Jack Rust gives his son the chance to grow beyond Harambe’s limits, while later losses force both father and son to redefine what strength and leadership mean.

Biography

A leader who trusts Jack

Harambe first meets Jack as the big brorilla leading the gymonkeys and brorillas of the nature reserve. Jack gives him the name Harambe, and the two quickly develop a bond based on mutual respect. Harambe leads the pack into training and danger rather than asking them to stand behind him: at the cold pond he risks the waterfall to gain strength, and he helps Jack hunt the black wolves. When one wolf kills Herom, Harambe’s grief turns into a furious attack; though the pack wins, he is badly injured and other members are killed. Jack acknowledges that the victory belongs to the whole group, and Harambe remains part of the leadership that buries the dead and protects the survivors (Chapters 23–31).

After the funeral, Harambe makes a harder choice. He and his partner Aya have a young son, Brock, whose potential exceeds what Harambe can offer. Harambe believes he was spawned as an adult and has reached the limits the System allows him, while Jack can give Brock access to a broader life and the chance to become stronger. He is unwilling to part with his son, but still entrusts Brock to Jack because he believes the separation is in Brock’s interest. Jack promises to care for him; Harambe and Aya say goodbye as Brock leaves with his new big brother. The choice gives Brock a path into the wider world, but Harambe spends the separation missing him and worrying that he may have sent him into danger (Chapters 31, 40, 129, 180).

Holding the forest while Brock grows

Harambe stays in the Forest of the Strong and continues leading his people. He accepts the Bare Fist Brotherhood’s presence because he trusts Jack, even as human cultivators and the Brotherhood’s robot guard change the life of the reserve. The distance from Brock remains painful, but Harambe tells himself that a brorilla should become strong enough to survive and that his son can surpass him. When the war for Earth approaches, Harambe wants to defend his home and wishes Jack were safe; he also recognizes that safety alone will not make his pack stronger. He accepts a divided defense plan that assigns his brorillas to their own forest territory and puts the more powerful Sparman elsewhere, then goes to meet the invaders rather than waiting behind the walls (Chapters 71, 102, 129, 243).

Harambe continues to measure himself by responsibility for his pack. In an E-Grade dungeon, he presses toward its core and refuses to retreat when an enemy stronger than he is defeats him in a contest of will. Alexander Petrovic pins Harambe to the ground with ice spikes and forces him to watch as three brorillas are killed. Left alive but immobilized and grieving, Harambe cannot protect his people or face Brock when his son returns. His shame makes him turn away from Brock, who understands that staying would deepen his father’s pain. Brock leaves to pursue Alexander, choosing to wait for the right time rather than abandon the people who still need him; Oz and the brorillas later take revenge for Harambe. The defeat exposes the cost of Harambe’s old belief that a leader must meet every challenge personally (Chapters 304, 308).

Letting Brock lead, and becoming a grandfather

Harambe’s body heals, but the defeat changes him. After Brock avenges him and takes up the role of big bro, Harambe feels the burden of leadership lift. He becomes less strict while remaining physically strong and committed to training; with Earth secure, he can enjoy a quieter life instead of constantly carrying the pack’s safety on his shoulders. The father who once entrusted Brock to Jack now accepts Brock’s authority in his own right, and father and son embrace when Brock returns to Earth after reaching D-Grade. Their reunion lets Harambe see that the risk of separation fulfilled its purpose, even though he had to endure years of fear and loss (Chapters 324, 461–463).

Harambe later shares his discipline with the next generation. He trains Ebele and Eric, Jack and Vivi’s children, through demanding but measured exercise, explaining that good habits matter more than overexertion. His speech remains limited, but he has developed a rudimentary Dao perception and can use it to locate Eric, catching the flying child with a thrown bananarm. His care now combines the same insistence on strength with greater patience: he wants the children to build healthy habits without learning to hate training. Harambe remains close to Brock and the brorillas, and appears among Jack’s old friends at the later gathering (Chapters 412, 552).

Appearance and personality

Harambe is an enormous, muscular brorilla with yellow eyes and a gruff expression. By his D-Grade breakthrough, gray tufts have appeared in his fur. He speaks only in short, imperfect phrases even after years with the Brotherhood, and often communicates through gestures, growls, and expressions. He is proud, stubborn, and willing to risk himself for his pack; beneath that imposing manner, he is affectionate toward Aya and Brock and capable of difficult self-sacrifice. His early instinct to answer a challenge can become recklessness, while later experience makes him more willing to let Brock lead.

Abilities and cultivation

Harambe is a brorilla whose strength is developed through physical training, combat, and the species’ Big Thoughts. Unlike human cultivators, brorillas do not progress through levels in the same way; they sharpen their muscles and Big Thoughts through exercise and battle. His power is most visible in his tremendous physical strength, resilience, leadership, and ability to read danger. He later develops rudimentary Dao perception, though no named Dao or detailed formal technique is established for him.

Physical strength and combat

Harambe fights with his body: he charges on his knuckles, swings opponents by the tail, and delivers punches strong enough to crater the ground. In the early forest, the Ice Pond’s cold strengthens him enough to gain several levels, and the High Speed Bush plus the pond improve his speed for the wolf hunt. He can nevertheless be injured by enemies with greater strength or technique; the black wolf breaks his leg, and Alexander’s ice powers overwhelm him after winning their stare-down. Later, Harambe and his brorillas hunt E-Grade dungeon creatures, and his fists can kill E-Grade hyenas, showing that his physical cultivation continues even when ordinary level gains are unavailable to him (Chapters 24, 27–28, 304).

Big Thoughts and Dao perception

Big Thoughts are the brorillas’ means of developing their minds and bodies; Harambe can flare them to enhance himself in a contest of will. Against Alexander, both fighters intensify their gaze and inner resolve, but Harambe’s Big Thoughts cannot overcome the stronger opponent’s pressure, and he loses when he blinks. Harambe later describes seeking battle once weight training stops producing growth, showing that he uses danger and combat as a way to continue developing (Chapters 243, 304).

By Chapter 412, Harambe can release a rudimentary Dao perception across the nearby forest. He uses it to locate Eric, then hurls a bananarm that catches and returns the flying child. The perception is not identified as a specific Dao, and its range beyond that local search is unknown; his use demonstrates both developing awareness and precise control over a thrown object (Chapter 412).

Relationships

  • Brock: Harambe’s son. He entrusts Brock to Jack because Brock has more potential than Harambe can cultivate himself, then spends years missing and worrying about him. Their reunion follows Brock’s return to Earth and advancement to D-Grade. Brock later assumes the leadership role Harambe once carried.
  • Jack Rust: Harambe’s trusted friend and Brock’s chosen guardian. Harambe follows Jack into the wolf hunt, accepts his help for the pack, and trusts him with Brock’s future.
  • Aya: Harambe’s partner and Brock’s mother. They make the painful decision together to let Brock travel with Jack, and later live with their adult son’s family on Earth.
  • Oz: The strongest brorilla after Harambe. Oz and the pack take revenge after Alexander’s attack leaves Harambe unable to fight.
  • Alexander Petrovic: Harambe’s stronger opponent in the E-Grade dungeon. Alexander defeats and humiliates him, then leaves him pinned while three brorillas are killed; Brock later avenges his father.
  • Ebele and Eric: Harambe’s grandchildren. He trains them in the forest, balancing demanding exercise with the need to build habits without overtraining them.
