Ma Hong Yun

Ma Hong Yun is a Northern Plains Gu Master whose body carries the lasting effect of Fortune Rivalling Heaven Gu. His improbable luck repeatedly converts danger into opportunity, but his defining choice is not accidental: he refuses to abandon Zhao Lian Yun, endures Snowy Mountain's refinement, and carries her through Reverse Flow River until he dies from exhaustion.

Biography

A slave protected by impossible luck

Ma Hong Yun begins as a poor slave who receives the Ma surname after accidentally saving Ma Ying Jie. He survives being used as bait and stumbles into Gu worms and cultivation resources that should have gone to stronger people. Zhao Lian Yun recognizes that impossible pattern earlier than he does and supplies much of the practical judgment he lacks. (Chapters 570–577)

During the Imperial Court struggle he advances to rank three and enters the blessed land with the Ma tribe. Frost Jade Peacock recognizes Ma and Zhao together, while Giant Sun's will discovers that the one-use rank-eight Fortune Rivalling Heaven Gu has already placed its all-living-being luck on him. Ma resists pressure to abandon Zhao, and both survive the collapse of the blessed land, but the same luck that protects him makes every major faction want to possess him. (Chapters 614–633)

Snowy Mountain captivity and death in Reverse Flow River

After their escape, Ma and Zhao are captured and auctioned. Old Ancestor Xue Hu buys Ma for Fortune Rivalling Heaven's refinement, and Lady Wan Shou repeatedly subjects him to lightning and other refinement methods. His luck sabotages materials and turns calamity back on the refiners, while the process raises him to rank-five peak stage and leaves many lightning-path dao marks on his body without giving him a mature lightning-path system. (Chapters 761–772, 1195, 1232, and 1267)

When the struggle reaches Reverse Flow River, Ma rejects appeals to leave Zhao and carries her after she can no longer continue. The river strips away outside methods and tests perseverance directly; his fortune cannot replace physical strength or will forever. He reaches his limit, is captured by Fang Yuan, and dies when he finally relaxes. Fang Yuan keeps his soul and later extracts the all-living-being luck inheritance, leaving Zhao unable to revive him while the soul remains captive. (Chapters 1282–1304, 2091, and 2334)

Appearance and personality

Ma Hong Yun is a young Northern Plains man whose ordeal at Snowy Mountain leaves him battered and pale. Nothing in his ordinary appearance suggests the rank-eight luck effect attached to him. His cultivation rises rapidly, but he continues to look and act more like an overwhelmed tribesman than a polished expert. (Chapters 570–577, 1232, and 1284)

He is gullible, awkward, and poor at anticipating manipulation, yet also grateful and exceptionally loyal. He apologizes readily, trusts people who show him kindness, and endures prolonged torture without surrendering Zhao. His final crossing of Reverse Flow River separates courage from luck: he persists through his own resolve after external techniques stop deciding the outcome. (Chapters 614–618, 1267, and 1282–1284)

Abilities and cultivation

Fortune Rivalling Heaven's protection

The one-use rank-eight Fortune Rivalling Heaven Gu grants Ma all-living-being luck, drawing favorable outcomes from the world around him. Threats can become opportunities, hostile refinement suffers coincidences, and resources fall into his path. The effect is persistent but not omnipotent: it can harm surrounding people, does not supply sound judgment, and does not prevent exhaustion in Reverse Flow River. It disperses when he dies. Mortal cultivation and lightning dao marks

Ma begins with B-grade aptitude and rises from rank one to rank five peak stage. Much of that advancement comes through rewards, inherited fortune, and forced refinement rather than a deeply developed combat style. Snowy Mountain's lightning treatment engraves many lightning-path dao marks on him, but those marks are an imposed bodily accumulation; no complete matching set of killer moves is shown before his death. Perseverance under suppression

Reverse Flow River suppresses Gu worms and leaves entrants dependent on their own bodies and persistence. Ma can carry Zhao through the current for an extended period because loyalty supplies a clear reason to continue. The feat has an absolute human limit: once his mental and physical strength is spent, neither cultivation nor former luck can prevent collapse. (Chapters 1282–1284)

Zhao Lian Yun

Zhao Lian Yun is Ma's adviser, companion, and the person he consistently chooses over safety. Her sharper understanding guides his early advancement, while his loyalty protects her when Giant Sun's will and Reverse Flow River make abandonment the easier choice. Her later political power does not solve the central obstacle to revival: Fang Yuan still holds his soul. (Chapters 570–577, 616–633, 1282–1284, and 2091)

Ma Ying Jie

Ma Ying Jie gives the former slave his surname and a place in Ma tribe after Ma accidentally saves him. Ma Hong Yun regards that kindness as a debt and trusts the tribe leader even when his own sudden fortune alters his position. (Chapters 570 and 614)

Fang Yuan

Fang Yuan competes for Ma because all-living-being luck has enormous strategic value. He captures Ma at the end of the Reverse Flow River struggle, stores the soul after death, and searches it for the luck-path inheritance. That possession turns Ma's posthumous fate into leverage over Zhao. (Chapters 1284–1304 and 2334)
