Xu Fei

Xu Fei is a young Heng Yue cultivator who exists within the dream world formed around Wang Lin's mortal life. Lively and perceptive, she introduces Wang Lin to Zhou Rui on a rain-soaked boat and later helps Zhou Rui recognize the aged scholar whose path briefly crossed theirs. Biography

Meeting on the rain boat

Xu Fei and her senior sister Zhou Rui share shelter with the young scholar Wang Lin during a storm. Both women feel that his name is strangely familiar despite believing they have never met him. Xu Fei introduces herself and Zhou Rui, playfully leaving her senior sister to supply her own name. After the two cultivators depart, Wang Lin carries their names into a dream of the Heng Yue Sect, revealing how the constructed world reshapes familiar figures into a different life. Years pass within that mortal life. Xu Fei travels as a cultivator in Zhao with Zhou Rui, Wang Zhuo, and others. When Wang Lin's awakening will stops the thunder and rain across the country, she is among the flying cultivators shocked by a power beyond their understanding. She and Zhou Rui nevertheless continue along the ordinary trajectory of their own lives. (Chapter 1595)

Recognition after two decades

More than twenty years after the first meeting, Xu Fei and Zhou Rui pass the now-aged Wang Lin on another boat. Xu Fei notices him looking at them and later recognizes that the old man was the blushing young scholar from the rainstorm. Her observation prompts Zhou Rui to turn back and search the city, but Wang Lin has already moved on and the paths do not cross again. (Chapters 1603–1604)

Xu Fei later gathers with the other familiar figures around Wang Lin as he comprehends the dream's karmic structure. When he rejects the constructed world's claim upon him, Zhao and its inhabitants dissolve. Xu Fei and Zhou Rui are frozen in flight and turn to ash in the wind, ending the alternate existence. Appearance and personality

Xu Fei is a young and beautiful woman, introduced in green beside Zhou Rui in purple. She has a bright voice, a playful manner, and an observant curiosity: she winks during introductions, notices Wang Lin watching from the other boat, and is the first to recover the connection between his young and old appearances. She is less emotionally entangled than Zhou Rui but understands enough to sigh when her senior sister rushes after him. (Chapters 1591 and 1603–1604)

Abilities and cultivation

• Cultivator flight: Xu Fei can travel through Zhao in the air with Zhou Rui and other Heng Yue cultivators. Her exact cultivation realm and flight implement are not identified. (Chapters 1595 and 1613)
