Tie Yan

Tie Yan is a Cloud Sky Sect head elder who gives up his office to seek Wang Lin's guidance. Guarding Zhou Ru teaches him the mortal understanding needed for Soul Formation, and his gratitude turns into a lifelong guardianship that eventually costs him cultivation and lifespan. Biography

Leaving the Cloud Sky Sect

Tie Yan begins as one of the Cloud Sky Sect's head elders. When Wang Lin's identity as the sect master must be protected, he supports erasing low-ranked disciples' memories and threatens anyone who might expose him to Red Butterfly. His severity is paired with a clear ambition: after Li Muwan recovers enough to travel, Tie Yan and Lu Fei surrender their head-elder positions and follow Wang Lin in hope of reaching Soul Formation. Tie Yan has remained at late-stage Nascent Soul for 172 years and already suspects that closed-door accumulation is the wrong path, but Chu has no Soul Formation precedent to teach him what is missing. Wang Lin explains that comprehension needs an emotion powerful enough to move the cultivator, then uses Zhou Yi's pagoda as a pressure field through which the two elders must refine their control. Guarding Li Muwan and Zhou Ru

Tie Yan's service soon extends beyond cultivation. He accompanies Wang Lin and Li Muwan through the Sea of Devils, uses his experience to arrange entry to an auction, guards Li Muwan when Wang Lin leaves, and gathers rare ingredients for her pill. After Li Muwan's soul enters the infant Zhou Ru, Wang Lin stations Tie Yan near Apricot Village. He maintains divine sense over every household and initially treats the assignment as half-seclusion, but a year among mortals changes him. He stops concentrating on cultivation and becomes absorbed in ordinary village life. Wang Lin recognizes that this is the emotional understanding Tie Yan lacked and gives him a carving containing the time domain to study. What begins as an order becomes attachment: Tie Yan rejects Lu Fei's offer to replace him and later returns to accompany the growing Zhou Ru, whom he protects, indulges, and comes to love as herself rather than only as Li Muwan's vessel. Breakthrough and lifelong guardianship

When Wang Lin leaves for Mount Suzaku, Tie Yan promises to protect Zhou Ru and accepts the title “benefactor” for the man who showed him the path forward. Wang Lin later sends him to live in Chu's capital and complete the mortal experience; within the predicted period Tie Yan reaches Soul Formation, raising Chu to a rank-four cultivation country. Wang Lin then entrusts him with a sealed bag to give Zhou Ru only if she reaches Nascent Soul by herself. Tie Yan never attempts to break the seal. As Zhou Ru grows, he remains “Grandpa Tie Yan,” advises her against forcing progress, and preserves the gift while she moves to Mount Suzaku. His obedience is not merely fear: he has watched her since infancy and treats her as family. (Chapters 360, 392, 470, and 611)

Sacrifice, reunion, and restored cultivation

Zhou Ru eventually wants to leave planet Suzaku without the cultivation to survive the journey. Tie Yan spends his own life force, works with Zhou Wutai, and uses a great quantity of celestial jade to force her barely into Soul Transformation. The act shortens his life and later degrades his cultivation. A century afterward, with death aura already surrounding him, he still sits beneath Wang Lin's statue and warns an invading cultivator that damaging it will bring certain death. Wang Lin's return vindicates that loyalty. When the two meet again, Wang Lin rebukes Tie Yan's sacrifice but recognizes its karmic cause, compresses celestial spiritual energy into his body to restore the lost realm, and leaves him a hill of jade and nine swords. He also releases Tie Yan from further responsibility for the Wang family, allowing the old guardian to cultivate for himself at last. (Chapters 888–889 and 901)

Appearance and personality

Tie Yan is an old man who later wears a daoist robe with a dignified bearing. Near the end of his lifespan his eyes dim and death aura gathers around him, although Wang Lin restores his depleted cultivation before their last direct separation. He is initially ruthless about sect security and intensely focused on advancement. Life among mortals reveals a patient, affectionate side: he watches an entire village without intruding, grows attached to Zhou Ru, gives her small gifts, and becomes the grandfather who sees the child rather than the soul within her. His gratitude toward Wang Lin is absolute, but his decision to sacrifice himself for Zhou Ru shows that personal affection can override even his benefactor's intended conditions. Abilities and cultivation

From late-stage Nascent Soul to Soul Formation

Tie Yan spends 172 years stalled at late-stage Nascent Soul because his spiritual energy is disordered and his cultivation lacks the personal comprehension required for Soul Formation. Wang Lin's training has two parts. The pressure surrounding Zhou Yi's pagoda forces Tie Yan to condense and control his energy; his progress is measured by how much closer he can approach. More importantly, guarding Apricot Village immerses him in mortal life until observation becomes genuine feeling rather than another seclusion exercise. Wang Lin identifies this change as the foundation of Tie Yan's domain and supplements it with a wooden carving containing the time domain. After further mortal experience in Chu's capital, Tie Yan reaches Soul Formation. His progression demonstrates that accumulated energy alone cannot cross the boundary: pressure training prepares the cultivation, while lived emotion supplies the understanding. Soul Transformation and forced advancement

Tie Yan later advances as high as Soul Transformation, but the corpus shows the danger of using resources to bypass a cultivator's natural pace. To help Zhou Ru leave Suzaku, he and Zhou Wutai spend celestial jades and Tie Yan's own life to raise her barely into Soul Transformation. The transfer or support costs him longevity and eventually causes his own realm to degrade to peak late-stage Soul Formation. Wang Lin reverses that damage by crushing large quantities of celestial jade, condensing the released celestial spiritual energy into spheres, and pressing it directly into Tie Yan's body. The restoration returns the lost cultivation but does not make the original sacrifice efficient or safe; Wang Lin calls the act nonsense and orders Tie Yan to stop managing Wang-family affairs. Divine sense, domain study, and entrusted defenses

As a Nascent Soul elder, Tie Yan can keep divine sense locked over Apricot Village for months, respond to threats, and coordinate with Lu Fei in contests of spiritual perception. His experience in the Sea of Devils also makes him a practical scout and intermediary. Wang Lin's time-domain carving gives him a model for comprehending how an emotion and law can be embodied in an object, though the text does not name Tie Yan's eventual domain. In his later years he receives nine swords from Wang Lin and a large reserve of celestial jade, but their detailed techniques are not demonstrated. His strongest established protection of Zhou Ru is therefore not a named attack; it is sustained vigilance, realm-level deterrence, and willingness to expend his own cultivation when ordinary means cannot fulfill her goal.
