Ouyang Zi is the Cloud Sky Sect's foremost rank-five alchemist. A disciple of the inner sect leader, he relinquishes the prospect of succession so that he can pursue alchemy without distraction. His work ranges from a lethal sacrifice-refining method to the years-long effort that produces a rank-six Return to Origin Pill for Li Muwan. (Chapters 223–224 and 337–338)

Biography

Sacrifice refining

Ouyang Zi's overriding ambition is to reach the heights of pill refinement. He has taken a Ghost Sight Pill, surviving its dangerous odds and gaining the ability to perceive changes inside pill furnaces. He then devises Sacrifice Refining, a method that consumes six rank-four pills to create a rank-five pill. When an attempt begins losing spiritual energy, he orders the six assisting alchemists to make a blood sacrifice; their cores detonate, the refinement succeeds, and he names the result the Six Dao Spirit Pill in their memory. (Chapters 223–224)

His obsession makes him willing to subordinate himself to anyone who can advance his research. He offers soul blood in exchange for the rank-five pills needed to repeat Sacrifice Refining, caring far more about reaching rank six—and eventually his dream of a rank-nine pill—than about sect authority. (Chapter 226)

The Return to Origin Pill

Ouyang Zi later helps investigate medicines that might extend Li Muwan's life. When Wang Lin supplies the rank-six Return to Origin Pill recipe, the original formula requires 138 ingredients that have become extinct. Ouyang Zi develops thirty-seven substitute ingredients for the final three and works with a total collection exceeding one thousand materials. Years of repeated refinement make him irritable and physically exhausted, but they also bring his lifelong rank-six ambition within reach. (Chapters 328 and 337)

He ultimately completes the pill and announces the successful refinement before collapsing from weakness. He is carried back to the Cloud Sky Sect alive; the corpus does not record his later fate. (Chapter 338)

Appearance and personality

Ouyang Zi is a white-haired old man in a gray robe, with eyes made strange and penetrating by the Ghost Sight Pill. He is proud, temperamental, and ethically ruthless when a refinement is at stake. At the same time, his willingness to spend years solving an impossible formula shows genuine technical persistence rather than mere vanity. (Chapters 223–224 and 337)

Abilities and cultivation

  • Rank-five alchemy: Ouyang Zi can refine pills at the fifth rank and understands furnace behavior, ingredient substitution, and large-scale recipe reconstruction. His rank describes demonstrated alchemical attainment, not his personal cultivation realm. (Chapters 223–224 and 337)
  • Ghost Sight: The successful outcome of the Ghost Sight Pill lets him see and diagnose the processes occurring inside pill furnaces. The treatment is hazardous: most who take the pill go blind instead. (Chapter 223)
  • Sacrifice Refining: His original method sacrifices six rank-four pills to raise a refinement to rank five. In the demonstrated attempt, he also consumes the lives and cores of six assistants when the furnace begins to fail, showing both the technique's cost and his lack of restraint. (Chapter 224)
  • Rank-six breakthrough: With Wang Lin's recipe and the Cloud Sky Sect's resources, Ouyang Zi replaces extinct components and successfully creates a Return to Origin Pill. The achievement leaves him severely weakened and does not establish that every future rank-six refinement would be equally successful. (Chapters 337–338)
  • Nascent Soul cultivation: He is at the early Nascent Soul stage when introduced and later reaches the mid stage; the corpus does not support the previous late-stage attribution. (Chapters 223 and 337)
