Lou Yun
Lou Yun is a high-status disciple of the Heavenly Ghost Sect and a late-stage Soul Transformation cultivator close to the Ascendant stage. He enters the Demon Spirit Land with inherited knowledge and a heavenly ghost lent by his master, but Wang Lin separates him from that guardian, destroys his body, and searches his origin soul for its secrets. (Chapters 530–531)
Biography
Defeat in the Demon Spirit Land
Lou Yun tries to kill Wang Lin for the additional rank of demonic spiritual energy needed to meet the Sky Demon Country's entry requirement. He relies on his heavenly ghost, but Wang Lin uses soul fragments to lure it away and a spirit-beast treasure to destroy Lou Yun's body. Lou Yun escapes as an origin soul and nearly burns his essence to flee before Wang Lin catches him with the Soul Lasher. (Chapters 530–531)
Once captured, Lou Yun tries to deter Wang Lin by invoking his master, Daoist Ghost. Wang Lin instead restrains the origin soul, conducts a direct soul search, and extracts the demon crystal from Lou Yun's dantian. The process leaves the origin soul almost transparent; Wang Lin seals it in the soul flag with the intention of refining it into a primary soul. (Chapter 530)
Knowledge taken from his memories
Lou Yun's memories explain the ancient demon spirits, the Beginning of the Soul state, the importance of military accomplishments, and the competition for demonic spiritual energy. Much of this knowledge comes from an ancestor of his sect who survived an earlier opening of the Demon Spirit Land and recorded five hundred years of experience. Wang Lin uses that information to change his own strategy, cultivate a local force, and operate within Sky Demon Country's military law. (Chapters 531–532 and 548)
The memories also reveal Heavenly Ghost Sect devil restrictions and the ritual for producing a heavenly ghost: mortal blood, a cultivator's Nascent Soul, forty-nine years of summoning, and a secret life-bound refinement. Lou Yun had not completed control over the ghost loaned by his master, allowing it to betray him once separated from its source of blood essence. (Chapter 531)
Appearance and personality
Lou Yun first appears in a black robe. Even after losing his body and recognizing that escape is unlikely, he remains vicious and defiant, accusing Wang Lin of winning by deception and threatening revenge from his master. His attempt to murder Wang Lin for a single rank of demonic energy also shows the ruthless competition governing outsiders in the Demon Spirit Land. (Chapters 530–531)
Abilities and cultivation
- Late-stage Soul Transformation: Lou Yun is at the late Soul Transformation stage and close to Ascendant. His origin soul can resist effects that would completely immobilize a Nascent Soul, but Wang Lin's spirit beast, Soul Lasher, and prepared restrictions overcome it. (Chapter 530)
- Heavenly Ghost path: He cultivates the Heavenly Ghost Sect's soul-and-ghost tradition and can operate with a powerful incorporeal guardian. The specific ghost in this encounter is the weakest of Daoist Ghost's nine life-bound heavenly ghosts, lent to Lou Yun before the journey. (Chapters 530–531)
- Ghost control limitation: Lou Yun has not had enough time to fully refine the loaned heavenly ghost. When Wang Lin separates them and Lou Yun loses his body, the ghost betrays him and begins recovering its independence. (Chapter 531)
- Devil restrictions: His memories contain Heavenly Ghost Sect restriction spells that Wang Lin considers usable. The corpus does not enumerate which of those restrictions Lou Yun personally demonstrates in combat. (Chapter 530)
- Origin-soul escape: After bodily destruction, Lou Yun can flee and prepare to burn his origin essence for speed. The method would permanently damage him and is interrupted before completion. (Chapter 530)
Relationships
- Wang Lin: Wang Lin defeats Lou Yun, searches his origin soul, takes his demon crystal, and uses the stolen memories to shape his strategy in the Demon Spirit Land. (Chapters 530–532 and 548)
- Ouyang Hua: Lou Yun does not personally meet Ouyang Hua. Wang Lin uses knowledge taken from Lou Yun while teaching and directing Ouyang Hua's tribe. (Chapters 532–540)
- All-Seer: Lou Yun claims that his master, Daoist Ghost, speaks to the All-Seer as a peer. This is not evidence of a direct relationship between Lou Yun and the All-Seer. (Chapter 530)
Items
- Demon crystal: Contains two ranks of demonic spiritual energy. Lou Yun seeks a third rank to qualify for the left-wing demon general's entry condition, but Wang Lin extracts the crystal after defeating him. (Chapters 530–531)
- Heavenly ghost: A guardian lent by Daoist Ghost rather than Lou Yun's permanently mastered possession. Its incomplete refinement allows it to betray him. (Chapter 531)
