Liu Wenju is one of the two Core Formation ancestors leading the weakened Heng Yue Sect when Xuan Dao Sect seizes Heng Yue Mountain. Unable to defeat Pun Nanzi, he preserves the sect's surviving loyalists, organizes their retreat, and prepares to cultivate toward the Nascent Soul stage so the mountain might eventually be recovered. Biography

Loss of Heng Yue Mountain

Liu Wenju helps anchor Heng Yue Sect's mountain-protecting formation with the other Core Formation ancestor and the remaining elders. Pun Nanzi notes that Liu Wenju has risen from a junior he knew five hundred years earlier to a core member of the sect, but the formation lacks a Nascent Soul cultivator to draw out its full power. When Pun Nanzi breaks the defense and orders the sect to leave everything behind, Liu Wenju tries to invoke the two sects' former friendship and then reframes the surrender as a loan rather than conceding permanent ownership. He restrains his angrier companion rather than provoking a massacre. (Chapter 63)

Most elders and disciples defect rather than follow the dispossessed sect. Liu Wenju is visibly pained but does not force them to remain. He does, however, intercede when Pun Nanzi tries to recruit Wang Lin, calling Wang the Heng Yue Sect's head disciple and asking that he be allowed to leave with them. After the small loyal group escapes, Liu Wenju identifies a remote mountain house as temporary shelter and proposes recovery and closed-door cultivation as the immediate priorities. (Chapter 64)

Retreat and reconstruction

Liu Wenju and Ancestor Wang recover from the formation's drain, combine jade treasures into a fast flying disc, and carry the survivors away. When Xuan Dao Sect cultivators approach, Liu accelerates rather than risk a second confrontation. At the hidden mountain refuge, he opens a sealed cavern, assigns Lu Song responsibility for the inner disciples, and enters long-term seclusion with the goal of reaching Nascent Soul. (Chapters 64–66)

Before seclusion, Liu Wenju treats Wang Lin with unusual care. He prepares special quarters for him, permits him to visit his parents despite Ancestor Wang's refusal, gives him the method for opening the refuge's formation, and supplies a defensive jade able to withstand a Core Formation attack. Wang Lin does not return, and four years later Liu and Ancestor Wang believe he has died and regret allowing him to leave. The corpus does not show Liu Wenju again or resolve whether he completes his breakthrough. (Chapters 66–67 and 71)

Appearance and personality

Liu Wenju is a red-faced male elder. He is pragmatic under overwhelming pressure: he yields the mountain to prevent annihilation, absorbs the humiliation of defections, and prioritizes preserving a viable remnant of the sect. His defense of Wang Lin and gift of a life-saving treasure show generosity toward a promising disciple, while his retreat and planned century of seclusion reflect patience rather than reckless retaliation. (Chapters 63–67)

Abilities and cultivation

Core Formation cultivation

Liu Wenju is a Core Formation cultivator who has lived for at least five hundred years. He remains below the Nascent Soul stage and openly intends to reach it through prolonged closed-door cultivation. That gap is decisive: Pun Nanzi observes that Heng Yue's defense formation would be terrifying under a Nascent Soul controller, but Liu Wenju and the other Core Formation ancestor can only sustain its defensive function before it breaks. (Chapters 63–64)

Formation operation

He is one of the principal controllers of Heng Yue Sect's mountain defense. Maintaining it against Pun Nanzi consumes enough spiritual energy that Liu must recover afterward. At the temporary camp he also throws out green jade pieces and forms seals to create a dome of green light over the group, and at the refuge he opens a concealed mountain entrance and provides Wang Lin with the method for operating its formation. (Chapters 63–67)

Combined air-travel technique

Liu Wenju and Ancestor Wang fuse two jades into a rainbow-lit disc capable of carrying the sect's survivors at several times the speed of ordinary flying swords. Liu directs the disc with hand seals and can curve around hazards, but rapid changes impose powerful forces on the passengers and require stronger cultivators to stabilize the edges. The method is collaborative in the displayed scene and should not be attributed to Liu alone without qualification. (Chapter 66)

Core treasure

The ancient jade Liu gives Wang Lin contains nine golden symbols and can withstand or deliver the force of a Core Formation cultivator. Wang Lin later uses its symbols to cage a flying sword, destroy protective jades, and kill a Foundation Establishment opponent. Situ Nan modifies the original single attack into nine weaker uses, so that later versatility is not solely Liu Wenju's design. (Chapters 67 and 77)

Relationships

  • Wang Lin: Liu Wenju defends Wang Lin's right to leave with Heng Yue Sect, gives him special accommodation, permits his family visit, and entrusts him with a protective core treasure and formation method. He later regrets the decision after Wang fails to return. (Chapters 64 and 66–71)
  • Huang Long: Liu Wenju is Huang Long's sect ancestor and gave him the Purple Moon Sword upon his becoming sect head. After the sect loses its home, Liu includes Huang Long among the leaders responsible for rebuilding its remnant. (Chapters 63–66)
  • Situ Nan: Liu Wenju never knowingly interacts with Situ Nan. Situ Nan is secretly with Wang Lin and later modifies the core treasure Liu provided, splitting its single use into nine weaker attacks. (Chapters 67 and 77)
