Grand Empyrean Gu Dao

Grand Empyrean Gu Dao is the Ancient clan's guardian and, for most of recorded history, the strongest cultivator on the Immortal Astral Continent. The Ancient Ancestor's memory and will give him unmatched power but also bind that power to the Ancient lands, turning his protection into both the foundation of imperial authority and a restriction he cannot escape. Biography

Guardian whose victory ends a war

Gu Dao normally remains on Mount Gu Dao and does not administer the three royal clans directly. His existence nevertheless determines the balance between Ancient and celestial territories. During an ancient invasion, he faces multiple celestial Grand Empyreans, kills three across the battle and ambush, and forces the invading forces to retreat. He becomes the only recorded Grand Empyrean known to have killed peers and the deterrent that prevents the celestial clan from destroying its rival. (Chapter 1969)

His political strategy is symbolic as well as martial. He carves statues of the Ancient Ancestor for the three imperial cities, supplies imperial families with restrictions, regulates succession agreements, and preserves the royal houses as expressions of clan unity. The emperors derive enormous authority from his protection, even though Gu Dao intervenes rarely enough that silence from Mount Gu Dao becomes a judgment in itself. Silence after the palace confrontation

Gu Dao watches Wang Lin's rise and permits him to borrow Mount Gu Dao's pressure to fuse Ancient and celestial power. Later, Wang Lin kills the Ancient Dao Emperor and changes the imperial succession, yet Gu Dao neither hunts him nor condemns the act. That restraint quiets factions demanding revenge and alarms other Grand Empyreans, who understand that Gu Dao's inaction is deliberate rather than ignorance. Battle for number one

When Wang Lin prepares to leave, Gu Dao demands that he remain until the Realm opens. Their disagreement becomes the first battle in countless years between Gu Dao and a true equal. Gu Dao reveals that he has inherited part of the Ancient Ancestor's memory, will, and appearance. That inheritance explains both his strength and why he cannot carry it far beyond Ancient territory. The answer beyond the gate

Gu Dao arrives for the Immemorial God Realm's opening and enters alongside Wang Lin. He seeks the truth pursued by the Ancient and Celestial Ancestors and witnesses Wang Lin complete the Boundary Compass and walk the Heaven Trampling Bridge. Dumbfounded, he recognizes that sight as the answer he wanted. Wang Lin opens a vortex back to the continent; Gu Dao bows and returns, alive, while Wang Lin continues beyond. (Chapters 2083–2088)

Appearance and personality

Gu Dao is initially concealed by fog in the tower on Mount Gu Dao. When Wang Lin tears the fog away, he is revealed as a thin, grey-haired man in a green robe whose face matches the statues of the Ancient Ancestor. He is restrained, patient, and burdened by inherited purpose. His apparent political detachment conceals careful judgment, while his final search shows that guarding the clan has never erased his wish to understand or leave the role imposed upon him. Abilities and cultivation

Half-step Heaven Trampling

Gu Dao has reached the Heaven Trampling Bridges and is stuck at the sixth bridge, placing him half a step into the fourth step. His Grand Empyrean sun is nearly equal in size to all ordinary Grand Empyrean suns combined, and his casual power can kill a Grand Empyrean. Law, fog beast, and Ancient World

His manifested fog forms a nine-headed beast and releases enormous numbers of fog spheres, each dangerous even to Ascendant Empyreans. A single finger combines wind, rain, thunder, the five elements, and the laws of the world. Ancient World, created through the Ancient Ancestor's life and faith, imposes an inherited reality on the battlefield. Ancient Ancestor inheritance and restriction

Gu Dao absorbs part of the Ancient Ancestor's memory and will, gradually taking the Ancestor's appearance and gaining the mandate to guard the Ancient clan. The inheritance also limits him: if he travels too far from Ancient territory, its power disappears. This resolves the apparent contradiction between his ability to destroy celestial Grand Empyreans and his refusal to conquer the entire continent. Clan-wide authority

Gu Dao passes down the Purple Print Ancestral Soul Lock, gifts law-bearing weapons, commands the three royal clans, and alone can remove certain imperial restrictions.
