Cheng Xian

Cheng Xian is a talkative Cloud Sky Sect disciple and rank-two alchemist who befriends Wang Lin during his disguised entry into the sect. His pursuit of Gongsun Tong leads to the loss of one of his two spirit apes and gives Wang a personal reason to intervene in an otherwise internal dispute. (Chapters 213–219)

Biography

Friendship in the Cloud Sky Sect

Cheng Xian meets Wang Lin on the way to the southern courtyard and immediately fills the journey with sect gossip, alchemical information, and schemes for entering the female disciples' western courtyard. Although mischievous, he is generous enough to share spiritually enriched wine and later obtains the Foundation Establishment Pill recipe Wang needs. His conversation also alerts Wang to Li Muwan's position in the sect. (Chapters 213–216)

Cheng owns two spirit apes that he brought with him when joining the sect. He uses them as mounts and treats them as long-term companions, even if he sometimes steals their stored fruit. Wanting to please Gongsun Tong, he gives the apes to her under the mistaken belief that she wants mounts. She instead has the larger ape's core removed for alchemy and retains the smaller one. (Chapters 214–216 and 218)

Betrayal and Wang Lin's intervention

Repeated attempts to recover the surviving ape leave Cheng badly injured by Lu Song and confined by his own teacher for protection. When a masked Wang questions him, Cheng admits his own fault but asks for the offenders to die if the smaller ape has also been killed. Wang acts because Cheng had helped him obtain the pill recipe, kills Gongsun Tong and Cheng Ling, and leaves Cheng among those questioned by the sect. The corpus does not show Cheng after the investigation. (Chapters 218–219)

Appearance and personality

Cheng Xian is a young man with a lively, mischievous manner. He talks almost continuously, trades in rumors, flirts recklessly, and provokes people with jokes, but Wang finds him amusing rather than malicious. His grief over the spirit apes reveals genuine attachment beneath his careless behavior, while his willingness to face death when he thinks an assassin has come shows stubborn courage. Alchemy

Cheng can refine rank-two pills and believes he is approaching the ability to refine rank three. The supplied chapters do not show a full refinement or identify a specialty, so his practical ceiling beyond that self-assessment is unknown. His useful contribution to Wang is informational and logistical: he secures a Foundation Establishment Pill recipe through his sect connections. (Chapters 213 and 215–216)

Spirit-ape manifestation and defensive tools

When attacked by Cheng Lin's sound-producing bells, Cheng first raises a light screen from a jade. After it breaks, he exhales yellow light carrying the fragrance of herbs; it forms a fierce spirit ape that blows the sound waves back and injures the attacker. The manifestation then dissolves into yellow light and returns to him. The text does not explain whether this is a spell, an alchemical effect, or a stored spirit. His two living spirit apes are separate companions and mounts, not manifestations of the same ability. (Chapters 214–215)

Relationships

• Wang Lin: Cheng befriends Wang's disguised avatar, shares sect knowledge, and obtains a valuable pill recipe for him. Wang later repays that help by intervening in the spirit-ape dispute. (Chapters 213–219)
