Biography

Directing Hermes toward war

Mayne first appears managing the brutal defense of Hermes, willing to halt supporting engines once their losses outweigh immediate value. As the Church prepares campaigns across the kingdoms, he controls information, allocates Judgement and God's Punishment forces, and presses a strategy of expansion under the claim of preserving humanity. His choices make secrecy and war inseparable from the Church's public faith. (Chapters 67, 84, 351, and 442)

Taking a throne that could not save him

O'Brien's failing health and the concealed succession create pressure Mayne answers through betrayal rather than stewardship. He takes the papal position while continuing a war the Church can no longer control. Later testimony identifies the succession as stolen and confirms Mayne's death; the institution he tried to command fragments, leaving his military ruthlessness unable to secure either Hermes or his own legitimacy.
