Lily
Lily is a microbial witch, researcher, preservation specialist, and healer.
Biography
From preserving food to controlling microbes
At sixteen, Lily reaches Border Town with the surviving Witch Cooperation Association. Her ability had preserved the fugitives' food and made her important to their survival, yet ordinary storage in the town leaves her afraid of becoming useless. Roland's equal treatment and promise of instruction push her toward literacy, microscopy, and the study of the tiny organisms behind her power. (Chapters 98–99 and 208)
Research turns preservation into medicine
Repeated failed attempts to imitate particular microbes frustrate her until a conversation with Mystery Moon gives her the idea of making her parent organism identical to a target. The resulting breakthrough lets the transformed population replace other microorganisms, supporting Cleansing Water, epidemic control, and later public-health planning; she remains a sharp-tongued but committed researcher in her latest scenes. (Chapters 752–754, 850, 903, 1174, and 1211–1212)
Appearance and personality
Lily is introduced with twin ponytails, a delicate doll-like face, and little visible expression. Her blunt replies and southern accent make her seem aloof, but her worry about contributing, private care for Mystery Moon, and approval of a brave newly awakened witch reveal loyalty beneath the sarcasm. (Chapters 98–99, 208, and 752–754)
Magic and abilities
Lily creates a microscopic parent population that initially prevents spoilage by assimilating other microorganisms. After evolution and extensive observation, she can make it copy a selected microbe and propagate that form through a sample. This supports preservation, infection-resistant Cleansing Water, and disease control, but it requires a target she can study and does not replace trauma healing. (Chapters 98, 208, 752–754, 850, and 1174)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Food-preservation ability | 98–99 | Her initial magic preserves food by transforming its microorganisms, but she cannot yet perceive or control the microscopic population precisely. |
| First evolution — mother and replica organisms | 207–208 | Her magic condenses and fundamentally changes into mothers that assimilate surrounding microorganisms into self-propagating replicas. |
| Second evolution — targeted microbial copying | 754, 759 | Learns to convert a mother into a chosen observed microorganism and make it reproduce that form; Chapter 759 explicitly confirms this as her second evolution. |
| Adulthood derivative — stored parent populations | 784 | Upon adulthood, gains a derivative skill that stores converted mothers inside her body and recalls them without needing the target specimen on site. |
Relationships
Lily's closest recurring foil is Mystery Moon: she mocks the older girl's schemes yet studies alongside her, comforts her, and often follows her investigations. Wendy supervises Lily's education and safety, while Roland Wimbledon supplies the conceptual and technical framework for her research. (Chapters 208, 664–665, 752–754, and 1211–1212)
