Kanas

Kanas is a rat leader and criminal organizer.

Biography

Control of Black Street ends at the scaffold

Kanas rules a group of young Rats through fear and expects them to bring him information and vulnerable witches. When Snaketooth's group withholds Paper in hopes of feeding themselves first, Kanas responds by sending all four into dangerous work, turning scarcity into tighter criminal control. (Chapter 459)

Roland's occupation dismantles the Rat leadership faster than Kanas can recover authority. He disappears while his confidants distribute food, is captured with the other Black Street chiefs, and is publicly executed, ending the power that had seemed unavoidable to the children beneath him. (Chapters 462 and 464)

Appearance and personality

Kanas is remembered as domineering while in power and pale and trembling on the scaffold. The reversal is the corpus's clearest characterization: his authority depends on unprotected people fearing him and collapses once a stronger public system intervenes. (Chapters 459 and 464)

Magic and abilities

Kanas has no magic. He uses intimidation, informants, food distribution, and a Rat hierarchy; those methods offer no effective defense against organized arrest and trial. (Chapters 459, 462, and 464)

Relationships

Snaketooth and his companions work beneath Kanas but evade his demand concerning Paper. Kanas's coercion helps explain why the young Rats accept the new order after his execution. (Chapters 459, 462, and 464)
