Biography

Fear of a rival leads to rebellion

Jacques inherits the Elk Family but refuses to redeem his younger brother Rene, fearing the trained knight's popularity within the household. That private insecurity becomes political calculation when Jacques joins the Longsong conspiracy against Roland and uses the family title to assemble armed support. (Chapters 122 and 443)

During the rebellion he dismisses troubling reports from the docks and sends others to investigate while preserving his own position. Roland's army arrives before the coalition can secure the city, collapsing Jacques's plan; Roland later tells Rene that Jacques was killed in the rebellion and that the other participants will face the law. (Chapters 443, 448, and 451)

Appearance and personality

Jacques is described indirectly as lacking the martial bearing expected of a lord and preferring a noble's debauched life. He is suspicious, status-conscious, and willing to expose subordinates to danger, with fear of Rene driving choices that ultimately endanger the whole family. (Chapters 122, 443, and 448)
