Hogg

Hogg is Margaret's merchant friend, a Silver City mine owner who becomes an early buyer and advocate for Neverwinter's industrial products. (Chapters 212 and 253)

Biography

Choosing machines and open trade over inherited suspicion

Hogg's mining business gives him an immediate reason to judge steam engines by output rather than novelty. He orders equipment, brings metal and other supplies west, and accepts the risks of demonstrations such as the balloon even when the experience terrifies him. He also states that he bears witches no malice, allowing commercial trust to cross a prejudice many peers preserve. Years later he brings merchants into Redwater's business gathering, expanding his role from buyer to organizer. (Chapters 212, 252–253, 283, and 876)

Appearance and personality

Hogg is presented as a hearty merchant with a strong appetite and expressive reactions, but no stable detailed portrait is established. He is sociable, commercially practical, curious, and candid about fear when technology exceeds his experience. (Chapters 212, 253, and 283)

Magic and abilities

Hogg has no magic. He demonstrates mining-market knowledge, bulk purchasing, trade networking, and the ability to evaluate machinery for practical use. He depends on Neverwinter's engineers for design and on transport and markets for returns. (Chapters 253, 283, and 876)

Relationships

Margaret is Hogg's old friend and the person whose judgment helps connect him to Roland's products. His continued dealings with Roland Wimbledon turn that introduction into a durable Western Region trade relationship. (Chapters 212, 253, 283, and 876)
