Proving an underestimated power through work

On Sleeping Island, combat-witch prejudice makes Candle's preservation ability seem expendable. She chooses to remain in Border Town long enough to study and apply it, hardening machine components that ordinary workshops replace too quickly. The effect earns factory workers' respect and, with Broken Sword's support, lasts longer; an old boiler's later explosion shows why her treatment can reduce wear without substituting for sound design and inspection.
