Ren is an experienced captain in his early thirties when Zain abruptly places the younger “Zero” over his team. His reluctance reflects concern about untested authority rather than lasting insubordination: after Aengus Degaro demonstrates overwhelming pressure and addresses the soldiers, fear and respect replace hesitation. Ren helps obtain the battlefield map, tries with Dior to prevent enraged nobles from disrupting camp discipline, and stays behind with Aria to lead the soldiers during Aengus's secret mission.
