Ephemera

Ephemera Fortuna is Edelweiss's representative in the Tournament of Champions and the bearer of the Virtue of Justice. A proud, combat-oriented member of the Seven Heavenly Virtues, she begins as an observer and antagonist of William, later becomes one of his secret partners and Familia members, and ultimately turns the power of Justice against the enemies threatening their world.

Biography

Justice changes sides

Ephemera first appears as a Tournament of Champions participant from the Gunnar Federation and later watches William's duel with Rebecca alongside other Divinity bearers. She is defeated in the tournament but remains confident enough to mock Sidonie and consider interfering with the duel until Chloee stops her. Under the Pope's orders, Ephemera and Lira later hunt the Prince of Darkness; the mission ends with William defeating and capturing them. Their relationship changes during captivity, and Ephemera joins his Familia, provides intelligence from inside the Holy Order, and lends him Justice during his battle with Felix. The Pope eventually imprisons her and draws power from her Divinity to defend the Palace of Light, but William frees her, and Ephemera fights with the Virtues in the War of Destruction before returning to family life in the after-story. (Chapters 598–701, 1116–1144, 1210–1293, 1309–1386, 1461–1472)

Appearance and personality

Ephemera is a young beauty with long purple hair and light-red eyes. She represents Edelweiss in formal competition and later appears in the attire of the Holy Order and its Virtuous maidens; the corpus does not assign a distinctive alternate transformation. (Chapters 598, 700, 1116)

She is proud, combative, sharp-tongued, and initially quick to judge people according to institutional labels. Ephemera also has a mischievous streak and a temper when ignored. Once her allegiance shifts, the same forcefulness appears as loyalty: she reports on the Holy Order's deployments, demands that William keep his promises, and endures the Pope's exploitation without renouncing the people she has chosen. (Chapters 698–701, 1116–1144, 1210, 1333)

Skills, classes, and divinities

  • Justice: Ephemera's Divinity raises attack and defense according to the user's conviction and what the user sincerely perceives as just. The increase can be drastic, but it depends on moral certainty rather than providing a fixed unconditional multiplier. (Chapter 1246)
  • Combat specialization: Ephemera is identified as one of the Virtues most oriented toward battle and can assess the intent of fighters from their conduct. Her tournament defeat and caution around Chloee establish that skill and Divinity do not make her unbeatable. (Chapters 598–701, 1116)
  • Familia transmission: After Ephemera joins William's Familia, he can invoke her name and channel a portion of Justice through their bond. This does not transfer ownership of the Divinity; Ephemera remains its bearer and can feel the connection strengthen when William calls on it. (Chapter 1246)
  • Divine energy as a constrained resource: The Pope can forcibly harness Ephemera's Divinity while she is shackled to a pillar, using it to power the Palace of Light's defenses. The scene shows that immobilization and ritual control can turn her power against her will. (Chapter 1333)
  • Intelligence and coordination: Ephemera secretly communicates Holy Order deployments to William's household and later coordinates with the other Virtues. Her reports are valuable but depend on access and communication rather than supernatural omniscience. (Chapters 1142–1144, 1293–1309)

Relationships

  • William: Ephemera moves from tournament observer and pursuer to captive, lover, informant, and Familia member. William can channel her Justice, while she expects him to keep private promises and later joins his family. (Chapters 698–701, 1116–1144, 1210–1246, 1333–1472)
  • Lira: Lira is Ephemera's fellow Virtue and closest recurring partner. They hunt William together, are defeated together, and later share both divided loyalties and resistance to the Pope's plans. (Chapters 1116–1144, 1210–1293, 1333, 1472)
  • Chloee: Chloee blocks Ephemera from interfering in William and Rebecca's duel and intimidates her despite their size difference. The encounter highlights the limit of Ephemera's arrogance and her recognition of stronger combatants. (Chapters 700–701)
  • The Pope: Ephemera initially serves the Holy Order under the Pope, but the Pope's escalating control places them in conflict. The Pope ultimately shackles her and exploits Justice as fuel for the Palace's barrier. (Chapters 1116–1144, 1293–1333)

Items

  • Communication crystal: William secretly gives Ephemera a crystal through which she can pass reports to Charmaine. It supports covert coordination but does not prevent the Palace of Light from confining her or cutting off her freedom. (Chapters 1142–1144)
  • No established signature weapon: Ephemera is a combat-focused Divinity bearer, but the supplied corpus does not consistently assign her a named personal weapon or cataloged artifact. Her defining resource is Justice itself. (Chapters 598–1472)
