Laden

Laden is a northern knight of House Steim and one of the region's foremost young talents. Introduced when his senses detect an assassin hidden beyond the notice of senior knights, he proves his loyalty during Prince Ren's attack on Reidan and grows from the Northern Nova into the Strongest in the North. His defining victory comes when Grid turns a half-draconian demand for sacrifice into training: with specialized equipment and simulated experience, Laden survives a stronger opponent, awakens his talent under pressure, and gives Frontier confidence in its own defenders. Biography

Recurring role and later consequences

Laden first appears guarding Irene near the birth of her son. He detects Kasim hiding above the room even though Grid, Piaro, and Asmophel do not, but the assassin retreats before Laden can prove the warning, causing Grid to dismiss him as a braggart. Soon afterward, Laden leads northern soldiers away from Reidan, encounters Prince Ren's covert invasion, defeats the cavalry commander Beida, and immediately turns back to protect Grid. Captured after buying time against superior forces, he refuses Ren's offer of survival because his loyalty belongs to Duke Steim, who defended the abandoned north. (Chapters 331, 334, and 338)

Grid rescues Laden but continues to underestimate him because he sees only the knight's lower level and exhausted condition. Laden nevertheless rushes into danger again, asks Grid to withdraw, and offers his own life against Chucksley. That willingness convinces Grid that the young knight's loyalty is exceptional even before he recognizes his skill. In later years Laden earns the title Strongest in the North, steadies Duke Steim during national emergencies, and is entrusted with the Gale Troops once led by Phoenix, marking him as the older knight's likely successor. When half-draconians demand that Frontier's strongest person fight for their amusement, Laden accepts death as the cost of protecting his lord and people. Grid rejects the premise that a knight exists as another being's plaything and reframes the encounter as a battle Laden can win. He scouts an opponent, teaches Laden the species' anatomy and habits, supplies practical equipment in place of ceremonial gear, and orders repeated mental simulations. Laden's fear remains, but accurate preparation converts an unknown execution into a recognizable contest and gives him a reason to choose resistance rather than dignified sacrifice. Against Praba, Laden uses two shields, barbed armor, and the Black Tortoise Thorn to counter Breath, scales, claws, tail attacks, and flight. His body eventually reaches its limit, and the weapon's proportional damage becomes less effective as the enemy weakens. Under that pressure, years of development and hundreds of simulated battles cause his natural senses to bloom. He reads attacks that previously overwhelmed him, gathers the blood on his weapon, and kills Praba before the final Breath can land. The victory transforms him from Frontier's prospective sacrifice into its young hero and is publicly interpreted as the evolution of a named NPC into a super-named one. (Chapters 1238–1240 and 1245)

Appearance and personality

Laden is introduced as a young man and remains baby-faced into early adulthood. By the half-draconian crisis he is near Grid's age, married, and the father of three children. The text emphasizes the contrast between his relatively small human frame and the physically ideal half-draconians, as well as the blood and severe injuries he accumulates while refusing to yield. He is vigilant, upright, loyal, and capable of fear without being controlled by it. Laden accepts responsibility for warnings others doubt, rapidly chooses his lord over royal authority, and regards protection of the north as the organizing purpose of his life. That devotion can become self-erasure: he initially mistakes being sacrificed for noble duty. Grid's intervention does not remove his willingness to risk himself, but redirects it toward victory, helping Laden see that service can require survival and growth rather than passive martyrdom. Abilities, classes, and skills

Laden is a talented swordsman and shield user with exceptional perception. As a youth he detects the Shadow King Kasim, later avoids and wounds Beida in a sudden cavalry encounter, and withstands Chucksley's attacks while exhausted. His strongest demonstrated faculty is accelerated combat learning: detailed intelligence lets him construct an opponent mentally, and repeated virtual defeats become usable experience. During the Praba battle, life-or-death pressure further heightens his senses until he can read wings, claws, tail angles, shockwaves, and Breath timing. (Chapters 331, 334, 338, 1236, and 1238–1239)

His growth does not erase material and physical limits. Before awakening, Laden is substantially below the half-draconian in level, strength, and speed. Grid's purpose-built shields neutralize Breath and direct attacks, Triple Layers absorbs blows and breaks claws, and the Black Tortoise Thorn removes scales and deals health-proportional damage. When the proportional effect weakens, Laden is almost defeated by accumulated fractures and internal injury. His eventual victory therefore combines talent, preparation, equipment, and persistence; it is not evidence that he can reproduce the result without those conditions. Relationships

Duke Steim is Laden's lord, guardian, and surrogate parent. Laden grows up admiring the man who stabilized the north, places that allegiance above the Eternal royal family, and repeatedly offers his life for Steim's land. Steim trusts him with the Gale Troops and considers him a future pillar of the kingdom, but ultimately asks him to flee rather than accept a meaningless death. (Chapters 334, 338, 727, and 1235)

Grid initially misreads Laden's unverified warning and battlefield exhaustion as proof that he is a boastful weakling. Laden's repeated attempts to protect him reveal extraordinary loyalty, while the half-draconian crisis makes Grid invest directly in his growth. By scouting, teaching, forging equipment, and trusting Laden to fight, Grid gives the knight the conditions to turn potential into a public victory. (Chapters 331, 338, 343, 1233, and 1235–1240)

Asmophel becomes the military commander under whose training system the northern forces develop. Laden's later ability to command elite troops and hold the title Strongest in the North exists within this wider Overgeared military structure, although the decisive half-draconian preparation comes directly from Grid rather than from borrowing another knight's abilities. • Black Tortoise Thorn: A thin iron-bar weapon forged by Grid to exploit half-draconian scales. Its impact removes scales, a concealed thorn pierces the exposed flesh, and a health-proportional effect is strongest early in the fight; Laden also gathers shed blood on it for his finishing attack.
