Ibellin
Ibellin is a young swordsman who joins Grid through the Tzedakah Guild and remains part of Overgeared's front line. Introduced as a talented sixteen-year-old with the potential to rival Regas, he specializes in flamberges, bleeding attacks, and later damage proportional to enemy health. Grid's weapons repeatedly unlock that specialization: the Thorn of Deep Grievance accelerates his early growth, while a dragon-scale sword and appointment as an angel restore his confidence and establish him as a mass-enemy specialist. He later serves in battles ranging from the hell expedition to combat against dragons. (Chapters 101–103, 110, 150, 254, 374, 723, 747, 1487, 1828, and 1940)
Biography
Recurring role and later consequences
Ibellin enters the story as one of the Tzedakah Guild's most promising younger members. While Grid forges his commissioned flamberge, Ibellin defends the smithy against sixteen members of the Giant Guild. He is defeated after a prolonged fight, but repeatedly rises because protecting Grid and the guild matters more to him than avoiding humiliation. Grid's intervention saves him, and the legendary Thorn of Deep Grievance that Grid completes afterward turns the defense into the start of a close professional bond. Its bleeding effects let Ibellin clear harder hunting grounds, rise much faster, and pursue his competitive ambition. (Chapters 101–103 and 110)
As Overgeared expands, Ibellin develops from an eager rookie into a dependable swordsman. He exploits openings beside Regas, Peak Sword, and other guild members, confronts stronger players even when his technique is insufficient, and internalizes the value of Grid-made equipment. His rivalry with peers and pride in items sometimes make him overconfident, but his conduct remains team-oriented: he protects allies, recognizes Grid's real strength during direct competition, and continues fighting in roles where a specialist attack can change the larger battle. (Chapters 150, 254, 374, 723, and 747)
The long hell expedition demonstrates both growth and a later crisis. Ibellin adapts to hell's stat penalties and hostile environment, gains levels quickly, and keeps a bright expression that encourages his companions. Years later, however, effort brings fewer visible results and he feels trapped behind a wall. Grid answers the stagnation with a Trauka-scale flamberge whose wide-area effect complements Ibellin's proportional damage, three myth-rated pieces of armor, and appointment as the Overgeared World's first player angel. The title “Angel of Slaughtering Mobs” sounds undignified, but accurately formalizes his value against large groups rather than singular named enemies. (Chapters 1487 and 1828)
Ibellin's later dragon battle confirms that the specialization remains consequential but dangerous. As part of the vanguard against Kubartos, he inflicts enough damage to disperse the dragon's attention and creates the opportunity for Toon to rescue Biban. Regas protects Ibellin during the maneuver, and Ibellin apologizes despite having performed the key tactical service. He ultimately dies with other front-line players during the battle, but as a player this is a combat death rather than a permanent end. (Chapter 1940)
Appearance and personality
Ibellin is introduced as a sixteen-year-old boy with a youthful, somewhat androgynous appearance; hostile players mock his pretty face and slight build after overpowering him. Much later in hell, he still wears a bright smile that contrasts with the environment and reflects the expedition's successful adaptation. The corpus does not provide a more detailed stable portrait. (Chapters 101–102 and 1487)
He is ambitious, proud, cheerful, loyal, and sensitive to the gap between effort and achievement. Early defeat brings tears because he believes his weakness has allowed others to insult his guild, not simply because he loses. Competition with Lauel and confidence in Grid's items drive his growth, while later stagnation leaves him discouraged without erasing his motivation. His readiness to apologize to Regas after succeeding at a high-risk task shows that self-criticism continues even after he becomes an angel and veteran vanguard. (Chapters 101–103, 110, 1487, 1828, and 1940)
Abilities, classes, and skills
Ibellin is a swordsman specializing in the flamberge. Its wavy edge inflicts persistent bleeding, and his early named attack Laceration converts that style into heavy direct damage. Grid's Thorn of Deep Grievance lets him hunt monsters above his previous range and progress far faster, but an ordinary flamberge's weak durability performs poorly against heavy armor. His early career therefore establishes both the offensive benefit of bleeding and the equipment dependence of his preferred weapon form. (Chapters 101–102 and 110)
By his later career, Ibellin deals damage proportional to a target's health, making him unusually effective against large numbers of ordinary enemies. The Trauka-scale flamberge adds Small Breath, a wide-area effect that distributes that strength across a crowd. Appointment as an angel surrounds him with Grid's divinity and makes him one of the Overgeared World's pillars, but it does not remove his core limitation: named or higher-grade enemies can resist the proportional effect, leaving him weaker than a conventional swordsman in that matchup. (Chapter 1828)
Experience and equipment still let him affect enemies beyond that preferred role. Against Kubartos, he lands significant damage and redirects the dragon's aggression, but doing so exposes him and requires Regas's protection. His death soon afterward confirms that angel status, myth-rated equipment, and high offensive value do not grant invulnerability against a dragon-level enemy. (Chapter 1940)
Relationships
Grid is Ibellin's blacksmith, guildmate, and later god. Ibellin first protects Grid's smithy at severe personal cost, and Grid repays that loyalty with weapons that repeatedly transform his growth. When Ibellin's confidence collapses, Grid identifies the tactical value others overlook, designs equipment around it, and appoints him as his first player angel. (Chapters 101–103, 110, and 1828)
Regas is both an early standard for Ibellin's potential and a later comrade in the vanguard. Ibellin grows beside him for years, and Regas protects him during the Kubartos battle after Ibellin draws the dragon's attention. Regas's reassurance acknowledges that the risky attack succeeded rather than treating Ibellin as a burden. (Chapters 101, 374, and 1940)
Lauel begins as Ibellin's same-age rival. Lauel's faster rise wounds Ibellin's self-esteem and pushes him to use the Thorn of Deep Grievance as a path to catching up. The rivalry is primarily motivational; both ultimately serve the same guild in very different strategic roles. (Chapter 110)
