Haejin
Haejin is a yangban who places twenty-second in Chiyou's test and expects the deaths of stronger candidates to open a place among the Seven. She treats humans as beings forbidden to meet her gaze and habitually mutilates those who do. During the ordeal, the collapse of the false world and disappearance of her red sword destroy the hope on which she depends. (Chapters 1294, 1297–1298, and 1300–1301)
Biography
Role in Yangbans, Gods, and New Legends
Haejin first appears when she kicks Queen Irene in the shin, provoking confusion around the ordeal. Her opportunity expands when Chiyou allows the yangbans to participate again. Having ranked twenty-second previously, she believes the deaths of Garam, Hangyeol, and other stronger candidates will let her inherit one of the vacant top-seven positions. (Chapters 1294 and 1297)
Her ambition is tied to rewards from Hanul and the hierarchy of divine approval. She once felt honored to receive the red phoenix's 9,857th heart, then resents her past excitement when the resurrected Red Phoenix causes that heart to disappear. The loss reveals that what she treated as proof of favor depended on the continued exploitation of a sacred creature. (Chapter 1298)
Haejin enters the test with the cruelty expected of a self-declared master beneath heaven. She habitually pulls out human eyes when people look up, never considering the victims' fear or suffering. Her confidence ultimately depends on believing the ordeal's world is fake and that she can reverse failure in reality. When the red sword disappears and that expectation collapses, she loses her will and is predicted to fall into ruin after returning. (Chapters 1300–1301)
Appearance and personality
No distinct physical description is documented. Haejin's expressions move from bright confidence at receiving another chance to clenched anger and final despair. She is ambitious, entitled, and casually sadistic toward humans, treating mutilation as enforcement of a natural hierarchy. (Chapters 1297–1298 and 1300–1301)
Abilities, classes, and skills
Haejin is a yangban who has repeatedly participated in Chiyou's ranking test, but her twenty-second placement keeps her below the Seven. The evidence does not isolate named combat skills. Her decisive limitation is psychological: the loss of the red sword and proof that the world cannot be dismissed as fake destroy her will to continue. (Chapters 1297 and 1301)
Relationships
Chiyou administers the ordeal through which Haejin seeks higher status. His decision to allow renewed participation creates the hope that later collapses. (Chapter 1297)
Grid and Irene are present in the test environment around Haejin, but the bounded evidence does not document a sustained personal rivalry with Grid. (Chapter 1294)
Hangyeol is one of the dead candidates whose absence Haejin views as an opening. Their connection is competitive and hierarchical rather than a documented friendship. (Chapter 1297)
