Hangyeol

Hangyeol is a yangban who follows Garam and pursues Grid out of curiosity about Garam's humiliation. Although ranked below the Seven after failing Chiyou's test, he remains far stronger than ordinary humans and uses versatile amulets. Grid kills him while disguised as Dante, causing Pungsa to witness the event and attribute emerging divinity to the borrowed identity. (Chapters 1161–1163, 1197, 1199, 1202, 1216, and 1294)

Biography

Role in Yangbans, Gods, and New Legends

Hangyeol follows Garam without detection and confronts Grid because he wants to understand why the human provokes such intense anger. His mockery reflects yangban contempt for humanity, but his pursuit is also an attempt to exploit an opportunity outside Garam's attention. As a bitter candidate who placed eighth or lower in Chiyou's test, Hangyeol lacks the faith and standing of the Seven while retaining power sufficient to expect an easy human victory. (Chapters 1161–1162)

The expectation fails. Hangyeol uses amulets with defensive, offensive, and curse functions, forcing Grid to learn their colors, inscriptions, and combinations during battle. Grid kills him while using Dante's appearance. The defeat demonstrates the gap between lower-ranked yangbans and the rapidly growing human whom Garam already fears, while giving Grid practical knowledge for later encounters with similar artifacts. Other failed candidates are subsequently measured against Hangyeol as they attempt to restore their standing. More importantly, Pungsa glimpses Grid over Hangyeol's corpse and associates the feat with Dante's form, granting deity to that identity. Later discussion confirms this mistaken attribution and prompts Grid to consider how Irene might similarly gain divinity. Hangyeol's final consequence thus belongs to the developing mechanics of human faith rather than to any survival after death. (Chapters 1197, 1216, and 1294)

Appearance and personality

Hangyeol is a yangban and is grouped with the Hwan Kingdom's handsome male and female candidates, but the evidence supplies no distinct facial or clothing description. He laughs at Grid, calls him ignorant, and approaches with amused arrogance. (Chapters 1161 and 1197)

He is curious, mocking, stealthy, and confident in the hierarchy separating yangbans from humans. His ability to conceal pursuit even from Garam supports that confidence, but his decision to treat Grid as entertainment leads directly to his death. (Chapters 1161–1163)

Abilities, classes, and skills

Hangyeol is weaker than the Seven yet still a superhuman yangban. He can hide his presence from Garam and deploy consumable amulets for protection, attacks, curses, and combined effects. Relationships

Garam is Hangyeol's superior benchmark and the person he follows. Hangyeol's interest in Grid begins with Garam's visible humiliation, though he acts independently rather than on a documented direct order. (Chapters 1161–1162)

Grid is Hangyeol's target and killer. Their fight teaches Grid how yangban amulets work and inadvertently contributes to the creation of deity around Dante's appearance. (Chapters 1161–1163, 1199, 1202, 1216, and 1294)

Pungsa witnesses the aftermath and misattributes Grid's victory to Dante. That observation turns Hangyeol's death into evidence about how witnessed deeds can produce divine reputation. (Chapters 1216 and 1294)
