Earl Zebra

Earl Zebra is an Eternal noble whose territory lies on a longer route between Reidan and Titan. After Grid deliberately travels through his domain and kills the Slaughterer, Zebra sends the hereditary Black Arrows assassins against him. The group is wiped out, ending the earl's demonstrated attempt to use covert violence against Grid. (Chapters 240 and 243–246)

Biography

Role in Reidan and the Overgeared Alliance

Zebra first appears as the noble to whom Veradin could have reported Grid. Grid later chooses the road through Zebra's territory even though it adds ten days to his journey, indicating that the detour serves a deliberate purpose rather than convenience. The bounded evidence does not establish Zebra's earlier private dealings beyond the concern surrounding that report. (Chapters 240 and 243)

When Zebra arrives after hearing news from his territory, he finds the supposedly undefeatable Slaughterer reduced to body parts by one person. Instead of treating the result as a warning to disengage, he retreats to his great hall and calls nine Black Arrows. His confidence rests on a family assassination unit whose missions have never previously failed. (Chapters 244–245)

The Black Arrows pursue Grid and are completely wiped out. Their record of violence alongside Zebra also ends on that day. The evidence does not document Zebra's death or a later punishment, so his personal status after losing the assassins remains unresolved. (Chapter 246)

Appearance and personality

No distinct facial, clothing, or age description is supplied. Zebra's disbelief at the Slaughterer's death and absolute faith in the Black Arrows show a noble accustomed to dependable enforcers. His response is retaliatory and overconfident rather than cautious. (Chapters 244–245)

Abilities, classes, and skills

Zebra's demonstrated power is institutional. He can summon nine elite assassins whose service to his family spans generations and whose record was previously perfect. No personal combat skill, class mechanic, or progression is documented, and the unit's destruction exposes the limit of relying on its reputation against Grid. (Chapters 245–246)

Relationships

Grid enters Zebra's territory, kills the Slaughterer, and eliminates the Black Arrows sent after him. Their conflict is indirect after the initial territorial provocation, with Zebra acting through assassins. (Chapters 243–246)

Veradin is questioned about not reporting Grid to Zebra, linking the earl to the information network around Grid's movements. The brief does not establish a deeper personal bond. (Chapter 240)
