Seo Tae-sik

Seo Tae-sik is the Cardinal Spear Admiral, one of the Imperial Palace's two dominant eunuchs and the officer who supplies evidence against the East Spear while trying to preserve the throne's authority during its confrontation with the Demonic Cult.

Biography

The Imperial Palace

Tae-sik appears at the emperor's right with two navy-clad attendants, balancing Admiral Yuk Cheong-un and the other great eunuch office. At the emperor's order, he calls the inspectors who infiltrated the East Spear and presents their account of Crown Prince Zhu Taiyoon's repeated visits and Admiral Lim's conspiracy. Tae-sik is triumphant because disciplined surveillance has given the throne evidence against a rival network, but the victory immediately creates a new crisis when Ran-yeong's flames surround palace troops and she declares her older loyalty to the Demonic Cult. Unaware of the two-hundred-year pact behind her guardianship, Tae-sik interprets the act as rebellion against the emperor. (Chapters 375–376)

Tae-sik repeatedly moves to defend the emperor even after the palace's martial hierarchy proves inadequate. He draws his weapon when Yeowun appears to threaten the throne, and later kneels with the other senior admiral to oppose demands that would drastically change the Imperial relationship with Wulin. His loyalty is institutional and personal: he treats concessions to an outside martial lord as damage to the emperor's dignity, even when direct resistance has little chance of success. During later demonstrations, Tae-sik exchanges private telepathic messages with the emperor so they can assess what public observers should not hear. Reports of Yeowun's Divine Master feats strain the scale by which he understands force, and he initially has difficulty accepting them. By Chapter 400 he remains alive and in service, but the crisis has shown that intelligence and palace rank can expose conspirators without giving him the power to control every consequence of that exposure. Tae-sik wears the navy uniform of the Cardinal Spear. He is outspoken, attentive to protocol, and intensely loyal to the emperor. He is willing to confront danger, but his instinct to classify conflicting loyalty as treason can make him slow to understand agreements older than his own office.
