Machil is a cadet from a middle-ranked clan who joins Chun Yeowun in hopes of escaping the limits imposed by the Six Clans.

Biography

Academy Tests and Rivalry

Machil and other cadets from ordinary or middle-ranked clans approach Yeowun because the Six Clans leave them little path upward. Yeowun's rise from isolation makes allegiance look like a chance to change their own fate, but the new followers cannot contribute if they rely entirely on him. Machil accepts Hu Bong's argument that a servant must strengthen himself instead of becoming a burden and commits to the faction's collective training. (Chapters 45–46, 64–65)

That allegiance becomes practical when Yeowun's faction retaliates against Ha Ilming's cadets for injuring Ohjong. Machil charges with the group rather than waiting for the strongest members to resolve the conflict. His contribution is modest beside Yeowun and Bakgi, but the choice turns his initial hope for patronage into active loyalty. (Chapters 70–74)

Six Swords and the Academy Trials

Machil struggles during formation instruction and dangerous academy tests, where stronger companions sometimes have to absorb force on his behalf. Yeowun nevertheless sees potential and gives him a handwritten copy of the Great Bear Fist, one of several different master-level arts selected for weaker followers. The gift removes the central limitation of Machil's background—lack of access to a high-ranking inheritance—but not the need to learn it. By the time the strongest faction members prepare to leave, he has not fully acquired the art and recognizes that he is still too weak to help his master directly.
