Jin Guuk is the eldest son of an ordinary soldier family whose gratitude for admission to Chun Yeowun's academy faction becomes earnest, if still developing, loyalty.

Biography

Academy Tests and Rivalry

Coming from an ordinary soldier family rather than a powerful clan, Jin Guuk enters Yeowun's group with little expectation of advancement. The welcome affects him so strongly that he bows until his forehead strikes the ground and pledges himself formally. He immediately stands behind Yeowun in the confrontation with Wu Penghak's cadets and charges with the wider faction during its retaliation against Ha Ilming's followers. His loyalty is emotional and public from the beginning, even though stronger companions do most of the decisive fighting. (Chapters 70–74)

Six Swords and the Academy Trials

Jin Guuk struggles to match that devotion with confidence. During the live-blade third test, he openly fears death and hopes to draw an easier opponent after dozens of cadets are injured. His sword is thrown back by a criminal's energy, reinforcing the gap between willingness and ability. He barely passes and doubts he can survive the next test when Yeowun announces that everyone will attempt it. Instead of discarding the weaker members, Yeowun writes and distributes different master-level manuals suited to them. Jin Guuk receives Sword Art of the Flying Wind and the breathing instruction low-ranked families lack, giving him both a technique and a way to build the internal energy needed to use it. Training does not produce instant mastery. Jin Guuk remains among the cadets who must compensate with greater effort, reacts badly to the stench of dragon-serpent blood, and is still learning his top-ranking art when Yeowun's strongest companions prepare to leave. He nevertheless becomes attached enough to wait impatiently for shared meals and tries to comfort Hu Bong when neither can follow their master. No stable physical description is supplied. Jin Guuk is earnest, grateful, anxious under mortal pressure, and openly affectionate toward his companions and master. Sword Art of the Flying Wind

Yeowun gives Jin Guuk a handwritten copy of Sword Art of the Flying Wind, a master-level sword art selected separately from the manuals given to other followers. Because ordinary soldier families lack the developed breathing traditions of high-ranked clans, Jin Guuk needs more than an external sword sequence.
