Huan Yi

Huan Yi, known as the Thousand Faces, is the elder of the Ghost Illusion Clan, a master mask maker, and the Demonic Cult's central intelligence figure. After testing Chun Yeowun through layered impersonations, he supports the heir with disguises, spies, and the Ghost Illusion Blade.

Biography

The Craft behind Mun Ku's Disguise

Huan Yi affects Yeowun's faction before meeting him. He is one of only a few recognized craftsmen capable of making artificial faces that deceive experienced martial artists. The mask he creates for Mun Ku is formed from treated pigskin and changes the apparent face, skin tone, and movement of the facial muscles. Its edge is so fine that Lee Hameng does not identify her as a disguised woman; Nano succeeds by magnifying the faint boundary and analyzing inconsistencies too small for ordinary sight. The mask is a physical disguise rather than a mind-altering illusion. It can withstand most shocks and, with care, remain usable for years, but it must be removed daily for airflow and reglued or it may come loose. Nano exposes it by magnifying the faint material difference behind the ears. Huan Yi supplements such craftsmanship with clothing, makeup, manner, and prepared speech. (Chapters 84–85, 151–157)

Nhu Yayen and the Seven Faces

When Yeowun visits the Ghost Illusion Clan seeking an elder's endorsement, Huan Yi appears as Nhu Yayen, a feminine adviser in red clothing and makeup. He then stages a test with seven identical figures presenting themselves as Huan Yi. The visible decoys repeat lines and mannerisms while the real elder covertly supplies cues, turning identity itself into the puzzle. Yeowun identifies the deception rather than accepting the most authoritative performance. (Chapters 151–157)

Huan Yi escalates the test into combat. He first uses the Art of Ghost Spirits for fast unarmed movement and sudden kicks, then draws on the Ghost Illusion Blade, filling the exchange with rapidly overlapping blade traces and force qi. Its final formation attempts to overwhelm perception with more attack lines than an opponent can calmly sort. Yeowun defeats the formation, proving both martial superiority and the analytical discipline Huan Yi wants in a future Lord. Huan Yi then kneels, gives him the medal proving elder support, and recognizes him as the rightful heir. (Chapters 151–166)

Intelligence in the Succession Crisis

Huan Yi's contribution extends beyond his own duel. The Ghost Illusion Clan maintains spies across Jianghu, making him the senior figure who receives, compares, and interprets reports from outside the cult. He cannot be casually sent away during a crisis because the entire network converges on him. This information lets Yeowun distinguish isolated incidents from coordinated faction movement and gives the new regime warning that direct martial reconnaissance cannot provide. (Chapters 166, 220–231)

Disguise becomes an operational weapon during the succession conflict. Yeowun uses a skin mask to impersonate Huan Yi and pass through the Blade Clan's defenses. The mask changes what guards think they see, while Yeowun must reproduce Huan Yi's bearing and possess enough knowledge to survive questions. Huan Yi's craft therefore opens a route; intelligence and performance keep that route from collapsing. (Chapters 220–261)

Ghost Illusion Clan and Later Campaigns

The clan's martial tradition is shaped by the Yin of the Ghost breathing method. It accumulates extreme yin energy, but its traditional practice imposes a severe bodily cost: male successors are castrated young, and prolonged cultivation feminizes the body. Huan Yi therefore uses adoption rather than relying on a biological son to continue the succession. The method explains both the clan's unusual presentation and why its cold, deceptive arts cannot be separated from the sacrifices demanded by its training system. (Chapter 157)

Huan Yi remains the cult's expected authority on obscure organizations and hidden movement in the Great Plains. When reports are obstructed, he treats the silence itself as evidence that an opponent is pressuring the network. He later arrives with Yin Moha under the Lord's authority and identifies Yoo Beom-ryeo, a Yulin military commander, as the force acting against the Ghost Illusion Clan. Even away from direct battle, his task is to turn incomplete reports, missing agents, and false identities into an actionable picture. (Chapters 403, 444)

Appearance and personality

Huan Yi's true appearance is deliberately uncertain because even senior allies usually see a chosen face. As Nhu Yayen he presents feminine clothing, cosmetics, and mannerisms consistent with the Ghost Illusion Clan's yin cultivation. He is theatrical, eccentric, and amused by deception, yet the playfulness conceals disciplined observation. He tests whether people can see through authority, not merely whether they can endure an attack.

Martial arts and abilities

Artificial-face craftsmanship

Huan Yi forms thin, durable masks from animal leather or human skin, matching color and facial contours closely enough to conceal the wearer's facial muscles. Mun Ku's pigskin mask withstands most shocks and is intended to last five years with care. Its known limitations are maintenance and detection: it needs daily air and fresh glue, while Nano can magnify the faint seam behind the ears. (Chapters 84–85)

Identity performance

Clothing, voice, posture, makeup, prepared dialogue, and decoys complete the physical mask. In the seven-Huan-Yi test, coordinated copies divide the observer's attention while the real elder controls the scene indirectly. The method is strongest against someone who assumes one visible body must contain the decision-maker. (Chapters 151–157)

Art of Ghost Spirits

A rapid unarmed movement system used for sudden entries, evasions, and kicks. Its ghostlike effect comes from speed and misleading motion rather than literal incorporeality. It lets Huan Yi change distance before drawing a blade, but direct exchanges still expose him to a faster or more perceptive opponent. (Chapters 151–166)

Ghost Illusion Blade

Huan Yi's principal weapon art produces dense, rapidly changing blade paths reinforced with force qi. Successive traces conceal which line carries the decisive force, and the final formation pressures an opponent's perception from many angles. Yeowun demonstrates its limitation by analyzing the structure and defeating the true attacks instead of reacting equally to every image. (Chapters 151–166)

Yin of the Ghost

The clan's breathing method contains so much yin energy that male practitioners are castrated at a young age. Continued cultivation makes the user's energy and body more feminine. The corpus does not further explain how that yin powers individual blade forms, so its demonstrated bodily cost and effect should not be expanded into an unsupported elemental mechanism. Intelligence-network command

Huan Yi coordinates spies spread across Jianghu, validates reports against one another, and interprets absent communication as carefully as received information. The network gives breadth, not certainty: isolated agents can be captured, reports delayed, and enemy pressure can create blind spots. (Chapters 231, 403, 444)
