Guard Jang
Guard Jang is Chun Yeowun's longtime household protector. He has neither the rank nor power of Yeowun's later followers, but he fills the parental role in the isolated childhood that precedes the Demonic Academy.
Biography
Raising an abandoned prince
Jang shares Yeowun's small residence on the southern side of the Demonic Cult and cares for him until the boy enters the academy at fifteen. The Lord assigned him to the household, but years of ordinary service turn that order into a familial bond. He rises early, practices in the yard, and cleans the home afterward. When Nano Machine gives Yeowun the ability to record movement, Jang's familiar routine becomes one of the first complete martial sequences available for scanning and analysis. His contribution is therefore both emotional and practical: before famous masters begin teaching Yeowun, the guard's daily discipline provides a model the boy can actually observe. The empty house and assassination crisis
After leaving the academy, Yeowun refuses to let another person fetch Jang and returns to the childhood home himself. The clean yard initially suggests that the old routine continues, but Yeowun senses no one inside. The succession struggle has reached even this modest household. Jang is found after enemy violence in a condition so severe that Yeowun, who has endured repeated killings without hesitation, remains awake through the night fearing that the last living connection to his childhood will disappear. Baek Jongmeng treats him and finally reports that Jang's life is stable, though all of his teeth have been pulled and the immediate expectation is that he may have to live on soup. (Chapters 157–171)
Recovery and Yeowun's coronation
Jang survives the attack. Yeowun does not accept the loss of his teeth as permanent: with Jongmeng's medical help, Ou Sunong's workmanship, and technical information supplied through Nano, Jang receives replacement implants. His recovery culminates at Yeowun's coronation. Instead of a senior warrior placing the crown, Jang walks onto the platform and performs the act himself. He addresses the former child as his Lord, congratulates him through tears, and says that Lady Hwa would be glad. The gesture gives Yeowun something political victory alone cannot provide—a parent-like witness from the life that everyone around the neglected prince once dismissed. (Chapters 183, 239, and 259)
Appearance and personality
The source does not give Jang an elaborate physical portrait. After his torture and treatment, his most specific visible feature is the set of implanted replacement teeth. His characterization comes through habit and conduct: he is disciplined enough to maintain the same dawn routine for years, humble enough that Yeowun initially learns from him without formal instruction, and loyal enough to preserve Lady Hwa's memory when the cult celebrates her son's rise. He is emotionally open at the coronation, where his tears express pride rather than weakness.
Martial arts and abilities
- Household martial routine: Jang performs a stable sequence of movements every morning. Nano can capture and reproduce this because Jang repeats it with trained consistency. The text does not name the style or give Jang a formal rank, so its importance lies less in exceptional destructive power than in providing Yeowun with an early, complete body-motion template. - Endurance and recovery: Jang lives through injuries that Baek Jongmeng considers potentially fatal. His strong constitution helps stabilize him after an entire night of treatment. Later dental implants restore his ability to present and speak normally; they are medical prosthetics produced through the combined expertise of Yeowun, Jongmeng, and Ou Sunong, not an innate enhancement or new combat art.
