Gak-yeon

Gak-yeon, later called Saint Gak-yeon, is Shaolin's influential head and Yulin's second leader, one of ten masters capable of controlling force qi with a finger.

Biography

The Imperial Palace

Gak-yeon enters Yulin politics as the Soorim Temple ambassador and head of Shaolin, the largest Buddhist center in Jianghu. His second seat reflects both symbolic religious influence and exceptional martial control. Other leaders prefer his presence when Buddhist authority must steady a disputed council, but separate duties sometimes keep him from the field. (Chapters 380–382)

The Yulin Treaty and Great Plains

During the alliance crisis, Gak-yeon recites sutras with a grave expression as Yi Mok's decisions divide the leadership. He questions reports rather than treating office as certainty and recognizes that the Blade God faction's hunt for spirit-beast cores threatens more than one faction. Changbai Mountain and the Blade God

At Changbai, Ark Wui's hostile energy and bloodstained clothes reveal that the advance force has already failed. Gak-yeon uses Diamond Never Breaks to shield leaders from a wave, but the force penetrates and makes him cough blood. When Mak Wijong argues that dismissing the victims would be irresponsible, Gak-yeon admits the commander is right despite the challenge to senior authority. Yeowun later suppresses the barracks so completely that even Gak-yeon cannot sense his arrival or withstand the released energy. When Mak Wijong is in danger, Gak-yeon invokes the Seventy-Two Rites and asks forgiveness while intervening. An invisible sword pierces his shoulder and throws him back, making a celebrated saint look third-rate by comparison. Appearance and personality

Gak-yeon is a solemn, restrained monk who frequently invokes Buddhist sutras while thinking. He respects hierarchy but can admit when a subordinate has made the better moral argument. His decision to protect Mak Wijong shows that humility in action, even when he knows Yeowun is beyond him.

Gak-yeon is one of roughly ten people able to control force qi with a finger, indicating rare precision rather than only a large energy reserve.
