Howlers Crossbow
Howlers Crossbow is the catalog name for the Anti-Altered crossbow line seized from the Underdogs and retained in the Howlers' communal arsenal. The corpus shows Kai fighting against and analyzing the weapons, but does not show him personally adopting one as a signature weapon. Marie is the principal demonstrated Howlers wielder, using a crossbow from the captured stock to support stronger fighters at range. (Chapters 347–348, 466, 519)
History
Seized from the Underdogs
Underdogs inner-circle members first deploy Anti-Altered crossbows against Kai during his confrontation with Damion. Kai observes that the weapon fires three electrified bolts before its user must reload, uses that pause to close distance, and is nevertheless weakened when three bolts strike him together. After the Howlers defeat the Underdogs and seize their Anti-Altered equipment, the crossbows enter a communal arsenal rather than becoming documented personal property of Kai. (Chapters 347–350, 466)
Marie's ranged support and communal deployment
Marie trains with the captured ranged weapons because she prefers supporting the Howlers from behind their front line. She carries a crossbow with an Anti-Altered spear during security duty and uses electrified bolts to disrupt attackers at the Cardenez factory. At the Scatterbugs casino, enemies close the distance and make the crossbow impractical, forcing her to switch to a spear and rely on Innu's protection. Her experience establishes both the weapon's value and its dependence on space, positioning, and a protected reload cycle. (Chapters 466, 519, 527, 547)
The Howlers later distribute ranged Anti-Altered weapons from their remaining stock to civilians defending Slough. Volunteers can operate a crossbow after brief instruction, and a successful bolt electrifies its target. The text does not identify whether Marie's earlier unit is among those handed out or provide a unique marker by which one physical crossbow can be followed. (Chapter 846)
Abilities and properties
- The crossbow fires electrified Anti-Altered bolts, normally in a sequence of three before reloading. A hit can pierce and shock a transformed target, and several simultaneous hits can weaken a werewolf. (Chapters 347–348)
- It supplies ranged suppression and can stop or disrupt ordinary gang fighters, allowing a physically weaker operator to contribute behind a front line. (Chapters 527, 846)
- Reloading creates a window in which a fast opponent can close the distance. The crossbow is also awkward once enemies reach melee range and depends on ammunition, aim, and clear lines of fire. (Chapters 348, 547)
- Anti-Altered does not mean universally decisive. Austin endures comparable electrified arrows with almost no reaction, showing that target durability can overwhelm the intended disabling effect. (Chapter 551)
- No unique crystal, maker, tier, or property separates a single “Kai” unit from the other Underdogs crossbows in the Howlers stock. (Chapters 347, 466, 846)
