Innu's Red Axes
Innu's Red Axes are a pair of beast weapons with red-scaled handles and pale, bone-like axe heads. They first belong to Damion, whose ability to draw power from them helps a human fight Altereds. After Damion's defeat, Kai passes the inherited pair to Innu, who develops them from an external source of strength into weapons coordinated with his Qi and telekinesis. (Chapters 285, 469, 899)
History
Damion's signature weapons and Kai's inheritance
Damion selects the axes from his weapon display when preparing for serious violence, and fights with them as a matched pair. Their edges and transferred power let him threaten transformed opponents, throw the weapons, and damage bodies that ordinary blades would struggle to pierce. Kai is briefly given one axe as a sign that Damion considers him a possible successor, but the pair remains Damion's fighting equipment until the Underdogs leader is defeated. (Chapters 285, 324, 350)
Kai retains the axes after his father's death but dislikes the memories attached to them. When Innu loses the contest for the Howlers' mystery Altered Solution, Kai gives him both axes as a deliberately valuable consolation prize. Simply taking hold of them briefly energizes Innu, eases his injuries, and demonstrates why Damion had been dangerous without an Altered body. The transfer changes their ownership as well as their narrative meaning: they cease to be Damion's legacy of coercion and become Innu's route to keeping pace with superhuman allies. (Chapter 469)
Qi, telekinesis, and an earned fighting style
Innu initially depends on the axes' borrowed energy, but discovers that the restorative sensation diminishes with repeated use until it no longer helps him in that fight. Hunter training reveals the deeper origin: the axes were made from Ancient Beasts and can pass some of that power into their wielder. Innu learns to channel Qi through them, increasing the force of swings and throws, while his telekinesis lets him guide a thrown axe and recall it to his hand. The combination—not the weapons alone—allows him to fight opponents far beyond an ordinary human. (Chapters 551, 655–658, 899)
The pair also remains separable. Blake temporarily uses one during the escape from Ylva, and Haylock later seizes momentary control of an axe with aura strings before Innu recalls it. Innu increasingly uses the weapons to influence an entire battlefield, including destroying structural supports and throwing them through groups of Gluttons. At his latest appearance he still catches and rethrows the axes in combat, retaining possession of both. (Chapters 1278–1280, 1422, 1795–1797, 1825)
Abilities and properties
- The paired axes are made from Ancient Beasts and transfer energy or strength to a compatible wielder. The exact beasts, crafting method, tier, and total reserve are not identified. (Chapters 655, 899)
- Their power can briefly replenish or invigorate Innu, but the recovery becomes weaker with repeated draws and cannot replace his endurance indefinitely. (Chapters 469, 551, 1795–1797)
- Their heads can cut or lodge in Altered, beasts, and werewolves, while their construction tolerates repeated Qi-enhanced impacts. This does not make every blow decisive against higher-tier enemies. (Chapters 350, 658, 899, 1285)
- Innu channels Qi into the axes for stronger strikes and uses telekinesis to steer, recall, or attack at range. Those techniques are Innu's learned powers, not autonomous properties of the axes. (Chapters 899, 1422, 1825)
- The weapons can be caught, redirected, or temporarily controlled by sufficiently capable opponents; Innu's recall and grip remain relevant counters to losing them. (Chapters 1286, 1795–1797)
