Suzan

Suzan is the caretaker of Black Rock Orphanage and the closest maternal figure in Innu's childhood. Her struggle to support the children makes the orphanage vulnerable to the Grey Elephants' false charity, while her response to the resulting tragedy becomes a decisive emotional turning point for Innu.

Biography

Holding Black Rock together

Suzan grew up as an orphan and remains at Black Rock despite declining public funding, spending much of her own wages on the children and carrying a workload that older residents such as Kevin help relieve. She worries that Innu devotes too much of his young life to supporting them and would refuse money earned through fighting if she knew its source. When representatives offer to move the children to a modern, privately funded facility, Suzan distrusts surrendering their care but accepts after Kevin argues that Black Rock can no longer give them what they need. The decision is motivated by their welfare rather than personal profit, yet once they leave she finds the payment meaningless and goes to the new site intending to adopt at least one child. The false orphanage and its aftermath

Guards bar Suzan from the warehouse and the representatives' number disappears, prompting her to contact the police and join Innu's attempt to find the children. The Howlers discover too late that the Grey Elephants have converted the orphans into infected Altereds and released them during the Slough gang war. Suzan, normally opposed to violence, tells Innu to free the children from their suffering and make those responsible pay; her demand turns his grief into a lasting pledge of loyalty to Gary. After taking Kevin to safety, she resolves to take him and Innu in herself, and later helps them return to Black Rock while legal arrangements are pursued. (Chapters 280–295, 305–309, and 323)

Appearance and personality

Suzan wears large round glasses and is often seen with her hair untidy from constant work. She is nurturing, self-sacrificing, and reluctant to burden children with her own financial pressure. The massacre does not erase that care, but it pushes her to endorse punishment for the first time, showing the scale of the loss rather than a general appetite for violence. Powers and abilities

Suzan is an ordinary human with no demonstrated supernatural or Altered powers. Her strengths are practical caregiving, persistence, and moral authority over the family she raised. She manages an underfunded orphanage with little assistance, recognizes when the relocation has become suspicious, and gives Innu direction when grief leaves him unable to choose. She has no shown combat training and relies on the police and Howlers when the children face armed or supernatural danger. (Chapters 173–174 and 251–295)

Relationships

• Innu: Suzan is the closest person he has to a mother and the reason much of his early fighting income goes to Black Rock. Her demand for justice after the infected-Altered attack shapes his permanent commitment to Gary and the Howlers. (Chapters 173–174 and 294–295)
• Kevin: Kevin helps Suzan care for the younger children and persuades her to accept the relocation. They survive the attack together, and Suzan decides to provide him a home afterward. (Chapters 174, 251, and 279–309)
