Stinger
Stinger is a former Tier-3 gang leader who builds the largest and most active prisoner group inside a White Rose Altered prison. He maintains influence by testing newcomers and acting as a middleman between stronger factions, but his attempt to humiliate Gary Dem exposes both the limits of that position and a disabling effect of Gary's werewolf bite.
Biography
A prison hierarchy built on intimidation
Stinger enters prison after trying to expand his outside gang beyond what it could sustain and killing people to leave no witnesses. Inside, he survives by occupying the middle of the hierarchy: his group is numerous and loudly disciplines unaffiliated prisoners, while the stronger north and south factions tolerate him as a useful test for new arrivals. Gary's unknown Howlers affiliation therefore looks like an opportunity to reinforce Stinger's reputation. He investigates the gang, has Gary's meal spoiled, and surrounds him with roughly a dozen Altereds, only learning after the attack begins that the Howlers have risen into Tier 2 and that their leader is the newcomer himself. (Chapters 803–809 and 815)
Defeat, lost transformation, and survival
Gary defeats Stinger's entire group and bites him in the neck. Stinger initially treats the loss as another bargain he can survive, but a throbbing wound begins interrupting his transformation: his tail and hard scorpion casing retract when summoned, and within several days he can barely transform at all. Blackjack defeats him again, compels him to describe the symptoms, and uses Stinger and another bitten prisoner to confirm that Gary's bite progressively suppresses Altered powers. Stinger becomes more cautious around newcomers and remains on the margins while Gary, Blackjack, and Ice defeat the Warden; he is last seen cowering rather than joining the decisive attack, alive when the prison break begins. (Chapters 809–818 and 888–893)
Appearance and personality
Stinger is an adult male prisoner whose ordinary human features receive little description. His transformation produces a large scorpion-like tail and a hard external casing over parts of his body. He is domineering when backed by his group but pragmatic rather than fanatically brave: he researches possible retaliation, trades favors between stronger groups, and retreats into caution after repeated defeats. His own account recognizes that he has always been neither the strongest nor the weakest, and that overreaching caused both his imprisonment and his loss of standing inside it. (Chapters 803–818)
Powers and abilities
Scorpion-type Altered form
Stinger is a manufactured Altered whose form is based on a scorpion-like creature; the corpus does not identify the treatment or when he received it. He can manifest a large articulated tail ending in a stinger, stab with enough force to pierce a body, and cover his torso or face in a hard scorpion casing. His physiology also gives him considerable strength compared with other Altereds even before a complete transformation. No venom effect is demonstrated, so the stinger's confirmed function is physical penetration rather than poisoning. (Chapters 803 and 809–815)
The tail is his main weapon but is not fast enough to catch Blackjack, and the casing does not protect him when it fails to form. Gary's bite creates the clearest counter: pain spreads from the unhealed bite mark, the manifested parts revert, and the condition worsens over several days until Stinger describes himself as having almost lost his powers. The corpus does not show recovery, an evolved form, or a method by which Stinger can resist that suppression. (Chapters 809–818)
Gang leadership and prison knowledge
Stinger can recruit, gather information, and exploit the prison's informal rules. He commands the facility's largest active group and understands how favors keep him useful to the stronger north and south blocs. Those skills depend on reputation and Altered strength: once Gary overwhelms the group and Stinger's transformation begins failing, he cannot enforce the same authority against elite prisoners. (Chapters 803–818)
Relationships
- Gary Dem: Stinger selects Gary as a newcomer to discipline and is defeated and bitten instead. The bite progressively suppresses his Altered form, while Gary's later victory over the Warden confirms that Stinger had challenged the prison's strongest inmate. (Chapters 803–818 and 888–893)
- Blackjack: Stinger approaches Blackjack as part of his middleman role but is easily beaten. Blackjack then uses compulsion and observation of Stinger's wound to establish how Gary's bite affects Altereds. (Chapters 814–818)
