Stacy
Stacy Turnhell is Amy Dem's former best friend and an ordinary student whose fear, family debt, and exploitation by the Pincers make her one of the earliest civilian casualties to change the Howlers' direction. Her betrayal of Amy is real, but later revelations place it within sustained coercion rather than reducing her to a disloyal friend.
Biography
Friendship, Hawk, and fear-driven betrayal
Stacy attends the same all-girls school as Amy and dates Hawk, Raven's brother. She invites Amy to a karaoke gathering where Hawk and his friends take narcotics and try to force themselves on the girls; Gary Dem intervenes and gets them out. In the aftermath, Stacy and Amy both struggle around men. Stacy eventually gives Raven information connecting Gary to Hawk and leaves Amy behind when fear overwhelms her, ending their friendship. Amy remembers her as habitually timid beneath a tougher school facade, yet also acknowledges that Stacy kept Gary's identity secret until the pressure became desperate. Debt bondage and death
Stacy later disappears from school because her parents' mechanic business has been driven into debt. After gang harassment ruins the business, her parents take an illegal Pincers loan; the gang moves the family and claims Stacy will repay the debt as a waitress, then forces her into sex work by threatening to sell her parents' organs. Gary finds her on her first day and, despite refusing to forgive what she did to Amy, listens to her explanation and considers helping her escape. When Pincers guards attack Gary and Austin, Stacy clings to Gary in panic and a guard stabs her in the stomach. Gary reaches a hospital within the System's stated time limit, but Stacy dies from blood loss. The gang circulates a false overdose story, while her death drives Gary to destroy the Pincers and prevent more girls from sharing her fate. (Chapters 223–244)
Stacy's death continues to shape Amy, who regrets that their last shared memory was betrayal and later tells Raven that Stacy also suffered and died after the karaoke incident. Her parents reunite after losing her, only to be murdered in a later Altered case investigated by Sadie and Frank. Stacy therefore never receives reconciliation in life; the later understanding comes through the people who survive her. (Chapters 248–256, 779, and 1040–1041)
Appearance and personality
Stacy is a teenage schoolgirl who is later made to wear heavy makeup and a revealing work uniform at the Pincers venue. Amy describes her as a scared, easily pressured person who tried to project toughness at school. That fear leads her to harm Amy, but it also makes her vulnerable to adults who threaten her family. Even while trapped, she refuses to report Gary's questions to the Pincers and apologizes for drawing Amy into her problems. (Chapters 168 and 223–230)
Powers and abilities
Stacy is an ordinary human and demonstrates no Altered transformation, System ability, Qi, Hunter training, or supernatural resilience. She has the physical limits of a teenager: a single abdominal stabbing produces fatal blood loss despite Gary's rapid attempt to get her medical care. Her importance lies in her choices and the consequences of other people's power over her, not in combat abilities. (Chapters 225–230)
Relationships
- Amy Dem: Stacy is Amy's closest school friend before the karaoke attack and subsequent betrayal. Amy remains hurt but comes to recognize Stacy's fear and misses the friendship after her death. (Chapters 44–168, 225–256, and 1040–1041)
- Gary Dem: Gary rescues both girls from Hawk's group, later confronts Stacy over abandoning Amy, and then risks himself trying to save her from the Pincers. Her death becomes a decisive reason for his war on that gang. (Chapters 93–103 and 223–244)
- Hawk: Stacy's online relationship with Hawk begins as an escape from stress at home and becomes the route through which she and Amy are placed in danger. (Chapters 93–103 and 225)
