Bluebird

Gary Bluebird is the legendary commander of the Red Wing Kingdom's army and a master of projected Qi. Gary Dem, Kai, and Lupus meet a reconstruction of him inside the amulet's trial, where he becomes both an opponent and teacher. The preserved history also places him between Jack's werewolf pack and the kingdom he is sworn to defend.

Biography

Commander, judge, and reluctant teacher

Bluebird's reputation reaches the travelers before he does: soldiers describe him as the commander of the kingdom's entire army and a figure known across Bronzeland. When he finds Gary, Kai, and Lupus amid injured knights, he suppresses the conflict personally rather than accepting either side's account. His Qi intent makes Kai and Gary react to attacks he has not yet thrown, while projected blows floor Kai and Lupus without a visible strike. The encounter confirms that all three are extraordinary but also leaves Bluebird responsible for deciding whether they are threats. When Galdark later attacks them as suspected spies, Bluebird intervenes decisively and prevents suspicion from becoming an execution. (Chapters 1594–1619)

Once their immediate danger is resolved, Bluebird gives Kai advanced instruction in projecting Qi through a sword and forming the strike in the mind before the blade moves. His willingness to teach is exceptional and partly motivated by recognizing that the visitors will soon leave. That relationship matters during the Unzoku crisis: Bluebird joins Jack and the kingdom's defenders against the progenitor's forces, carrying the responsibility of protecting civilians while supernatural factions act on histories the ordinary knights barely understand. (Chapters 1642–1686 and 1708–1710)

The old pack and Ray's return

The trial's restored memories show that Bluebird once stopped Jack from killing his brother Steve, correctly sensing that the apparent betrayal concealed a larger manipulation. During the cursed full moon, however, the entire pack transforms and the kingdom's knights cannot contain them. Bluebird tries to stop Jack without killing him, is driven through a building by the Great Wolf's strength, and keeps rising while civilians die around him. Ray's return saves both Bluebird and the pack without slaughtering either side. Bluebird's relief reveals a deep earlier bond: Ray had previously sacrificed himself to save him, and Bluebird is the one who calls after the departing legend about Sylvia and his children. Because these events are preserved through the amulet rather than shown in Bluebird's later life, his ultimate historical fate remains unknown. (Chapters 1713–1715)

Appearance and personality

Bluebird appears to be in his fifties, with ragged blond hair graying at the sides and a strong build. He wears brilliant silver-white armor with gold trim, the Red Wing dragon emblem on the chest, and carries a sword. He is authoritative, observant, and willing to use overwhelming force, but he is not indiscriminately punitive. He tests unfamiliar fighters, stops Galdark's rush to judgment, teaches rare techniques once trust is earned, and tries to restrain Jack rather than kill a friend under supernatural control. (Chapters 1605–1619 and 1714)

Powers and abilities

Projected Qi and intent

Bluebird is an advanced Qi practitioner whose control exceeds that of ordinary Red Wing knights. He can project killing intent or the image of a strike before physically moving, causing sensitive opponents to dodge or guard against a blow that never comes. This is not simple illusion as presented: targets are sensing formed Qi and hostile intent, while Bluebird exploits the premature reaction to create an opening. Gary and Kai can detect it but still fall for the feints until they understand the mechanism. (Chapters 1605–1607)

He also releases Qi as invisible physical force. Air punches strike Kai and Lupus at range with Altered-like impact and cause internal pain, while sword training shows that the same principle can send a formed cut beyond the blade. Bluebird can reinforce his body and armor enough to stop Lupus's untransformed punch without moving, and his mastery combines projection, defense, timing, and conventional swordsmanship. The text does not give a numerical energy reserve, but sustained battles against Unzoku's forces and transformed werewolves show that his power is not limitless; Jack can overpower and launch him through a wall, and Bluebird doubts he can stop the rampage without lethal force. (Chapters 1605–1608, 1680–1686, and 1714)

Command and combat judgment

As army commander, Bluebird assesses chaotic scenes quickly, directs knights, and balances security against incomplete evidence. His intervention between Jack and Steve and his later handling of the three visitors show that this judgment is a major part of his effectiveness: he acts strongly enough to halt violence, but revises his position when new information appears. (Chapters 1605–1619 and 1713)

Relationships

  • Kai: Bluebird first subdues Kai, then recognizes his sensitivity to Qi and teaches him how to project intent and sword strikes. (Chapters 1605–1608 and 1708–1710)
  • Jack: Bluebird is both Jack's ally and the commander responsible for stopping him when grief or a curse makes him dangerous. He repeatedly chooses restraint over a lethal solution. (Chapters 1680–1686 and 1713–1715)
  • Ray: Ray previously sacrifices himself to save Bluebird and later returns to end the full-moon massacre. Bluebird's emotional reaction and questions about Ray's family show that their bond predates the crisis reconstructed by the trial. (Chapters 1714–1715)

Items

Bluebird has no finalized configured inventory item. He uses a sword and Red Wing armor, but neither is assigned as a distinct finalized personal item.
