Zac

Zac Lee is a high-level military-academy student who tries to take Quinn's newly purchased armour, then proposes a supposedly fair reflex-game wager to recover his pride. When Quinn's team begins to win, Zac uses magnetism to sabotage the machine and is left frightened into abandoning the prize. (Chapters 295–301)

Biography

A wager built on status and cheating

Zac notices Quinn's expensive equipment and assumes that a level-one student cannot deserve it. Confident in his own level-six rating and his stronger group, he tries to pull the case away, but Quinn's grip humiliates him. A soldier prevents an immediate fight, so Zac turns the dispute into a team wager: Quinn's armour against an intermediate crystal in a game that ostensibly prohibits abilities. Zac chooses a machine he has played repeatedly and treats both his opponents and weaker teammate Zippy with contempt, increasing the pressure on his own side. (Chapters 295–297)

Quinn's performance overturns Zac's expectation that level-one students will be easy prey. As the contest reaches a stage Zac believes he has little chance of clearing, he uses magnetism to hold back and then accelerate part of the metal mechanism. The interference tears the section free, and Zac immediately proposes a draw. Quinn identifies both the ability and the cheating, then uses influence while Zac is mentally unstable, ordering him to leave the crystal and go. Zac complies, and his companions later say that the encounter has traumatised him. (Chapters 298–301 and 307)

When Quinn finds him again, Zac assumes the stranger might possess mind control and could make his death look self-inflicted. Before Quinn makes any demand, Zac promises that he has revealed neither Quinn's identity nor school. This fearful cooperation ends the immediate conflict; Chapter 310 only refers back to the resolved “Zac problem,” and the corpus gives no later account of Zac's education, ability development, or fate. (Chapters 307 and 310)

Appearance and personality

The corpus does not establish Zac's hair, eyes, build, or uniform details. His behaviour is status-conscious and opportunistic: he interprets a low ability number as permission to seize property, designs a wager around his own experience, and cheats when skill does not guarantee victory. He also cares deeply about avoiding public embarrassment. After Quinn's influence overwhelms him, that pride gives way to sustained fear and avoidance rather than another attempt at retaliation. (Chapters 295–301 and 307)

Powers and abilities

Magnetism and disputed classification

Zac can exert magnetic force on metal. During the wager, he holds back the top mechanism of the training machine, then releases and pushes it so that it swings far faster than normal; the added force tears the component off. This demonstrates remote pulling, restraint, and pushing, but the corpus gives no maximum range, mass, duration, or cost. Quinn's first inspection labels Zac's power “Transformation ability,” while a later inspection identifies a magnetic skill and the scene directly demonstrates magnetism. The text does not explain whether “Transformation” is a category, an earlier error, or another aspect of his power, so the labels are not silently reconciled. (Chapters 295 and 299–300)

Ability level and practical limits

Zac is rated at level six, well above most of his companions, and that rating normally correlates with stronger mental resistance. It does not make him a disciplined fighter: his shown use of magnetism is covert sabotage rather than open combat, and Quinn's influence succeeds because Zac is already frightened and mentally unstable. Zac is experienced at the reflex machine and clears level five through concentration and committed blocks, yet believes he has only a small chance at level six. No later progression is shown. (Chapters 295, 299–301)

Relationships

  • Quinn: Zac initially sees Quinn as a low-level target whose equipment can be taken. Quinn's physical confidence, reflexes, and influence reverse the power dynamic, leaving Zac afraid even before their final conversation begins. (Chapters 295–301 and 307)
  • Sam: Sam intervenes when Zac's group surrounds Quinn's and later discovers that Zac's companions failed to expose Quinn through the game footage. Zac is absent from that attempted follow-up because he wants no further contact. (Chapters 295 and 307)
  • Vorden and Fex: Both support Quinn during the wager and recognise Zac's interference. Their presence adds to the pressure that makes Zac accept Quinn's command and leave. (Chapters 296–301)
  • Zippy: Zac belittles his lower-level teammate during the game. The criticism disrupts Zippy's concentration and contributes to his early elimination. (Chapter 297)
