Yanny

Yanny leads the powerful Predator faction of the Mermerial race and attempts to replace its former royal family. He justifies concentrating power as protection against alien intervention, but his seizure of the throne, murder of Ceril, and reliance on the celestial Yongu end with Wince defeating him and imposing exile. Biography

Seizing the Mermerial crown

The Predators had once ruled the Mermerial planets and defended them from outside attacks, and Yanny turns that history into a claim to renewed leadership. With the old king gone, he controls the capital, prepares his own crowning, and holds the royal faction at a decisive disadvantage. When Wince returns, Yanny surrounds her with trusted Predators and promises her life if she submits, then breaks the spirit of that promise by killing her sister Ceril because he believes only one royal bloodline is needed. His confidence rests on force and on the belief that no one remains capable of stopping him. (Chapters 1825 and 1831–1832)

Losing the city and his patron

The arrival of Sil and his allies exposes the weakness in Yanny's programme: the outsiders he fears are stronger than the forces he has assembled. Yanny initially tries negotiation, orders his Predators to attack, and attempts to force Wince into opening the royal vault. Once she acquires her father's trident, she repeatedly drives him back. Yanny continues fighting because he sees alien interference as proof that the Mermerials need his strength, using water attacks and finally breaking a blue pearl to summon his celestial patron Yongu. That last resort destroys his political position. Yongu fears Quinn, refuses Yanny's order to kill the intruders, and strikes him away when he protests. Wince regains authority and chooses to keep Yanny alive while Yongu remains useful, leaving the former would-be king silent and dependent on the patron who abandoned his cause. Yanny and Yongu then disappear under an agreement that they will not return to the planet except as allies. He is alive at exile, but the supplied corpus gives no later account of him. Appearance and personality

Yanny is a physically powerful Mermerial Predator with blue rings distributed across his body; the corpus does not establish stable details of his face, colouring, or clothing. He is proud, calculating, and authoritarian. He frames strength as necessary protection for his race, yet uses deception and murder to secure royal legitimacy, and his confidence gives way to fear when Yongu refuses to defend him. Water manipulation

Yanny can control water both defensively and offensively. He stops Sil's pressurised, cutting water spheres merely by touching and compressing them, later gathers unstable water balls that explode on contact with the ground, and combines two into a larger bomb. His control is effective underwater and remains usable after the city reaches the surface. Wince's royal trident nevertheless overpowers his ordinary water techniques, pierces his body, and lets her maintain pressure until his defeat. (Chapters 1833 and 1838–1840)

Predator physiology and blue-ring effect

Yanny possesses enough strength and durability to drag the resisting Wince while ignoring her blows and a water slash across his back. When he places a hand on Ceril's head, the blue rings across his body glow; she freezes, falls, and dies. The text establishes the lethal result but does not explain whether the rings drain energy, stop biological function, or use some other mechanism, so their operation and limits remain unknown. Leadership and celestial support

Yanny commands the Predator guards and formerly draws authority from Yongu. The blue pearl he carries releases celestial energy and manifests Yongu when broken, but the power belongs to the summoned celestial rather than to Yanny. Relationships

• Wince: Wince is the surviving royal claimant whom Yanny captures and intends to use for access to the vault. She acquires the royal trident, defeats him, restores her family's rule, and accepts his exile rather than immediate execution. (Chapters 1831–1841 and 1865–1867)
• Sil: Sil's intervention prevents Yanny from completing the coronation and gives Wince space to take revenge herself. Yanny's forces cannot neutralise him, undermining the Predator claim to be the race's sufficient defenders. (Chapters 1833–1838)
• Quinn: Quinn's arrival breaks Yanny's remaining confidence because Yongu recognises and fears him. Quinn makes Yanny's removal from the planet a condition of sparing Yongu. (Chapters 1840–1841)
