Unzoku
Unzoku is a werewolf Demon King serving Immortui and ruling the territory where the Chrono are forced to fight his Glutton-class werewolves. He cultivates strong victims so he can consume them and increase his own power, making appetite both his governing principle and his progression system. After eating fellow Demon King Tenbris, Unzoku reaches his demonstrated peak, but Immortui's defeat removes the power sustaining his demonic form and leaves him alive in a pale, human-like body. (Chapters 2392, 2406–2414, 2464, and 2517–2540)
Biography
Ruler of the Chrono pit
Unzoku is first named when Immortui orders the other Demon Kings to feed any rebellious Champions to him. Within his own territory, he maintains a pit where Chrono captives fight werewolves each night. Weaker werewolves consume those who fall and grow stronger; Unzoku arrives after the survivors have developed and eats the strongest himself. The system turns prolonged resistance into cultivation for his appetite while preserving Immortui's last Champion, Shinto, as a future resource. (Chapters 2392, 2406–2407, and 2464)
When Chris, Hikel, and Russ's constructed Hinto enter the pit, Unzoku immediately controls the ambient red energy to pin the Chrono against its walls. He recognises Shinto, exposes Hinto as a false construction, and destroys it by flicking a shed claw through its head. His explanation of the real Hinto's death persuades Shinto to oppose the intruders, but Unzoku's claimed honesty serves his appetite as well: he wants Shinto to choose rebellion so eating him can be justified. (Chapters 2406–2408)
Testing Chris and defending his territory
Chris's werewolf form interests Unzoku more than the other invaders. He identifies Chris as a shapeshifter-class werewolf and explains that werewolf classes and consumption determine different growth paths. Rather than kill him quickly, Unzoku lets Chris attack, heals the resulting wounds, and urges him to eat strong Chrono so he can become a better meal. Even after Chris's speed begins landing repeated strikes, Unzoku remains in place and demonstrates that one clean hit can inflict crippling internal damage. (Chapters 2409–2413)
Tenbris's arrival offends Unzoku's expectation that each Demon King has free control within his own territory. Immortui's new permission to devour rebellious Champions tempts him, but he also briefly considers concealing Chris so another Demon King cannot destroy a potential meal. The conflict exposes the boundary of Unzoku's independence: he resents intervention and imagines surpassing Immortui, yet still operates inside Immortui's planned war and obeys direct strategic messages. (Chapters 2413–2414)
Consuming Tenbris and reaching his peak
When Chris returns seeking werewolf Demon King blood, Unzoku again treats the fight as both sport and prospective feeding. Chris's speed and Shinto-derived strength can cut his arm, but Unzoku remains physically stronger and begins coordinating with Tenbris to constrain Chris's movement. When Tenbris becomes vulnerable, Unzoku abruptly bites off his head and consumes the entire Demon King. The choice removes an ally in exchange for absorbing a peer's power, fully expressing Unzoku's preference for personal growth over factional loyalty. (Chapters 2499–2511 and 2517)
Consumption produces an immediate surge: Unzoku's eyes radiate red energy, his howl shakes distant forces, and a single arm swing destroys Chris's attack and tears apart the battlefield through force alone. Chris and the Champions cannot defeat his regeneration and strength; instead, Chris coats him in black flame, forcing Unzoku to cut away flesh, then steals that flesh so Quinn's group can obtain both his blood and Tenbris's absorbed contribution. Immortui's message ends the battle before Unzoku can consume them. (Chapters 2517–2521)
Failed escape and loss of demonic power
Unzoku brings his werewolf fleets to Immortui's war and approaches the portal out of the red space, eager to escape confinement. Mundus and the assembled fighters immobilise him for less than a second and combine their beams to blast him away. He survives, destroys swarms of Divine beings, and notices that his regeneration has slowed, but chooses not to hurry back while Immortui and Quinn fight. (Chapters 2521 and 2529–2530)
Quinn's defeat of Immortui causes the red mist and the demons' sustaining power to disappear. Unzoku is thrown onto another planet and changes into a pale, human-like form with most of his demonic power gone. Unlike many weakened demons killed by their former victims, he remains alive and immediately decides survival is his priority. The corpus ends without showing whether his werewolf biology, consumption growth, or any combat technique remains usable in that state. (Chapter 2540)
Appearance and personality
At full power Unzoku is an enormous black-furred werewolf demon. Fine fur reveals a heavily muscled torso and forearms, while a thick mane surrounds his face and runs down his back. Hardened spikes rise from his shoulders, horns project from his head, and his mouth contains large black, sharp teeth. His low voice vibrates strongly enough to sicken nearby listeners. After Immortui's defeat these traits recede and his visible hand is pale and human-like. (Chapters 2406–2407 and 2540)
Unzoku is patient only when patience promises a stronger meal. He cultivates opponents, welcomes rebellion that frees him to devour Champions, and admires Chris's potential while trying to corrupt his restraint. He values territorial independence and strength above solidarity; eating Tenbris demonstrates that another Demon King's usefulness ends when consuming him offers greater growth. His final response to losing power is neither loyalty nor revenge but survival, consistent with the self-interest behind his service throughout. (Chapters 2407–2414, 2511–2521, and 2540)
Powers and abilities
Werewolf Demon King physiology
Unzoku possesses extreme strength, durability, speed, senses, claws, and regeneration. His smell identifies werewolf bloodlines and tracks opponents his eyes miss. A casual claw flick launches a shed nail fast enough to destroy Russ's durable Hinto construction, and the nail regrows immediately. Full arm swings create enormous cutting waves, while direct blows can inflict lethal internal damage through high-level armour. Chris eventually proves faster, but Unzoku remains overwhelmingly stronger. (Chapters 2406–2412 and 2510–2520)
Repeated claw wounds heal within moments, and Unzoku can cut away flesh infected by persistent black flame and regenerate the missing tissue. This healing is not unlimited or immune to interference: he must physically remove flesh when his energy cannot extinguish the flame, and wounds heal more slowly after the combined attack near the portal. His demonic physique ultimately depends on Immortui's continuing power and collapses after Immortui's death. (Chapters 2412, 2511, 2519, 2529–2530, and 2540)
Ambient red-energy control
Unzoku can gather and direct the red energy naturally present throughout Immortui's space. He condenses it into pressure strong enough to lift and pin an arena of Chrono against stone, senses disturbances in it before attacks, and releases broad claw-shaped waves through his strikes. A full howl sends swirling red energy out from his body, pushing Chris away and tearing the ground. Opponents can disperse or evade these effects with sufficiently strong Qi, speed, or energy, and the ambient source disappears when Immortui is defeated. (Chapters 2406–2412, 2519, and 2540)
Alpha howl and werewolf enhancement
Unzoku's low howl functions as an alpha command and enhancement for subordinate werewolves. It makes Glutton-class followers grow larger muscles and elongated limbs, increasing the danger they pose while binding their response to him. His own transformation is less visually separate than other Demon Kings' demon forms: he enlarges and shifts fully into his werewolf state rather than revealing an unrelated second anatomy. The corpus does not show whether he can still transform or empower followers after depowering. (Chapters 2408, 2411, and 2511)
Consumption-based growth
Like other werewolves, Unzoku grows by eating powerful beings, with stronger prey required as he advances. The Chrono pit industrialises that mechanic, and consuming Tenbris demonstrates its upper range: the fellow Demon King's energy is added to Unzoku's own, dramatically amplifying his eyes, howl, attacks, and destructive force. Absorbed power also remains present in Unzoku's flesh strongly enough that the group treats his blood as carrying Tenbris's contribution. (Chapters 2407, 2412–2413, and 2517–2519)
Growth requires actual consumption and suitable prey; anticipation or ordinary fighting does not grant it. His obsession also creates exploitable priorities: he prolongs fights to improve a meal, consumes an ally during battle, and becomes distracted by powerful bodies. Most importantly, accumulated consumption does not protect his powers from Immortui's collapse, leaving the latest state of every acquired enhancement unresolved. (Chapters 2412–2414, 2517–2521, and 2540)
Relationships
- Immortui: Immortui created or sustains Unzoku's demonic order, assigns him territory, and uses the threat of being fed to him as discipline. Unzoku obeys strategic commands while suspecting Immortui limits his meals to prevent him growing stronger; Immortui's defeat strips away his demonic power. (Chapters 2392, 2407, 2414, 2520–2521, and 2540)
- Chris: Unzoku recognises Chris as an unusual shapeshifter werewolf and tries to induce him to grow through consumption. Their two fights establish Chris's superior speed but Unzoku's greater strength and healing; Chris ultimately seeks only a blood sample and escapes without defeating him. (Chapters 2409–2414 and 2499–2520)
- Shinto: Unzoku keeps the Chrono Champion near the pit, waits for him to become worth eating, and uses information about Hinto to redirect his loyalties. Shinto later gives his power and life to Chris, helping the group obtain Unzoku's flesh without granting Unzoku the meal he cultivated. (Chapters 2407–2414 and 2517–2520)
- Tenbris: Unzoku resents Tenbris's intrusion into his territory and later fights beside him only until an opportunity to consume him appears. Eating Tenbris kills a nominal ally but creates Unzoku's greatest demonstrated power increase. (Chapters 2413–2414 and 2510–2519)
- Quinn: Quinn needs Unzoku's blood but never fights him directly. Chris's group secures it on Quinn's behalf, while Quinn later defeats Immortui and indirectly removes the power behind Unzoku's demon form. (Chapters 2499–2520 and 2540)
