Mona
Mona Bree is the head of the beast-taming Bree family and the only woman among the human Big Four at the Inter-Base Tournament. Initially a careful faction leader seeking a demon-tier beast, she becomes one of Richard Eno's trusted allies and later fights beside Quinn's coalition. Her innate control of beasts, supplemented for a time by a borrowed demon-tier amulet, makes her an important battlefield coordinator until Graham kills her in the final Dalki war. (Chapters 308, 597–598, 740–795, 1257, 1297, 1457, and 1563–1565)
Biography
The Bree family at the leaders' table
Mona enters the story as one of the Big Four leaders, distinguished by the Bree family's inherited power to tame beasts. At the Inter-Base Tournament she watches the military's students and the rivalry among the great families with the same measured curiosity she applies to powerful creatures. Her family's strategic aim is to find and control a demon-tier beast, an ambition that could secure their standing but also places Mona near threats her ordinary power cannot command. (Chapters 308–337 and 597–598)
Her encounter with Logan after the murder of his parents shows that calculation does not exclude sympathy. Mona offers information, follows leads connected to Eno, and negotiates access to a device capable of locating a demon-tier beast. She is candid that a beast tamer without a beast is at a disadvantage, yet she still helps Logan investigate rather than exploiting his isolation. The exchange begins a practical alliance between Bree resources and the younger coalition forming around Quinn. (Chapters 597–598)
Mona's caution also keeps her family from joining every conflict among the Big Four. When asked to support a campaign against the Blades, she and Owen refuse, avoiding the retaliatory destruction that befalls the Truedream faction. Her choice is not simple neutrality: she will risk herself for a defined objective, but she is unwilling to spend her people in another leader's grievance without a credible plan. (Chapters 618–623)
The demon-tier hunt and Richard Eno's rescue
During the coalition's demon-tier hunt, Mona provides expertise and controlled creatures while remaining alert to how other powers interact with her own. She worries that Sil may copy beast taming and disrupt the control structure on which her family relies. When the living demon-tier target appears, her innate taming fails to bring it under command, establishing a hard ceiling on the ability rather than allowing family reputation to substitute for demonstrated control. (Chapters 740–775)
Mona continues the fight through controlled spirits and beasts, but the operation becomes catastrophic. Richard Eno intervenes to save her and tells her that her power will still be needed. Mona's survival therefore changes her course: instead of returning immediately to normal Bree leadership, she travels with Eno and becomes connected to plans whose scale extends beyond competition among the Big Four. (Chapters 775–795)
Her disappearance has consequences at home. Without Mona's leadership and distinctive power, the Bree family loses stability and is dissolved or absorbed into the reorganised human factions. The result underscores how concentrated the family's authority had become in her: Eno preserves an individual he considers strategically important, but the institution she led cannot remain intact in her absence. (Chapters 811 and 1247–1257)
Blade Island and the Eno laboratory
Mona later returns to the coalition around Quinn and Eno. Eno entrusts her with a heart-linked map leading to one of his facilities, and she accompanies Quinn and Logan through the aftermath on Blade Island. She tames the Gorilla after the conditions suppressing it end, leaves Gorilla and Snakey to support allies, and helps recover or move bodies when the group is divided. These choices show her increasingly using beasts as independent support for a wider coalition rather than as symbols of Bree family rank. (Chapters 1247–1257 and 1295–1299)
Before the journey to Eno's laboratory, Quinn lends Mona a demon-tier amulet able to mark creatures. She accepts responsibility for collecting those already marked and returning the device. At the facility she helps identify the limits of her expertise: she can recognise that Dunluck is not a beast she controls, while the presence of Oscar's Dullahan form and other experiments makes clear that not every nonhuman body falls within Bree taming. (Chapters 1312–1324)
Mona later uses the amulet's marks to command Dalki during training and in operations. That control is equipment-derived and distinct from her inherited gift. Her innate power can dominate ordinary beasts and human–beast hybrids after they have lost human consciousness, but even she cannot control the enormous army assembled by Pure. The coalition benefits from both systems, yet each has its own eligibility and scale limits. (Chapters 1413 and 1457)
One Horn, Graham, and the final war
In the battle against One Horn, Mona fights beside Oscar, Samantha, Fex, and other coalition members. She uses marked creatures, beast equipment, a spear, and a black needle while helping execute a plan to bind the Dalki's wings and legs. Her contribution is tactical rather than decisive: One Horn's physical power exceeds any one fighter present, so success depends on coordinating restraints and attacks across the group. (Chapters 1494–1511)
The deaths of Oscar and Sach leave the survivors without settled command. Mona presses Samantha to assume responsibility despite her grief and criticises Oscar's decision to base leadership on what happened to his corpse. Her bluntness is harsh in the moment, but it reflects the same principle that guided her Big Four decisions: a force facing extinction cannot depend on symbols or wishes when someone living must choose what happens next. (Chapters 1510–1511)
Mona remains in the final Dalki campaign and brings her control network into the confrontation with Graham. The gap in power is absolute. Graham reaches her and bites off her head before her beasts or allies can save her; the demon-tier amulet falls after her death and is later preserved in a museum rather than returning to her. The later display records her contribution but does not indicate survival or resurrection. (Chapters 1530–1565 and 1701)
Appearance and personality
Mona has long dark-purple hair and first appears in black clothing with a pointed hat and veil, smiling as she observes the tournament. She is poised, pragmatic, and difficult to intimidate, preferring negotiation and preparation to theatrical aggression. Her concern for Logan and willingness to risk herself for the coalition reveal genuine compassion, while her response to Samantha after Oscar's death shows a capacity for severe honesty when leadership is at stake. Quinn later remembers her as selfless, a judgment consistent with her progression from family head to coalition fighter. (Chapters 308, 597–598, 1257, 1510–1511, and 1563–1565)
Powers and abilities
Beast taming
Mona's Bree ability lets her tame and command beasts. Once under her control, creatures can scout, transport people, restrain enemies, or fight at a distance from her, allowing Mona to coordinate a battlefield through several bodies. She works with creatures including Snakey and Gorilla and can redirect them to help other groups rather than keeping them physically beside her. (Chapters 740–795 and 1295–1299)
The power is neither universal nor automatic. Mona states that a beast tamer without a beast is disadvantaged, her attempt to control a living demon-tier beast fails, and Dunluck falls outside what she recognises as a beast. She can affect ordinary beasts and human–beast hybrids whose human consciousness is gone, but cannot command Pure's entire hybrid army. These examples establish limits based on the target's nature, strength, mental state, and the scale of the group being controlled. (Chapters 597, 775, 1324, and 1457)
Demon-tier amulet control
The demon-tier amulet loaned by Quinn marks creatures and permits Mona to gather or direct marked targets, including Dalki. This is a separate, equipment-based system rather than proof that her Bree power naturally controls Dalki. Mona uses the device because it expands the range of bodies available to the coalition, but she remains its temporary custodian and intends to return it after collecting the marked creatures. The amulet leaves her possession when Graham kills her. (Chapters 1313, 1413, 1457, 1563–1565, and 1701)
Combat and field command
Mona is capable of fighting directly with beast equipment, a spear, needles, and coordinated restraints. Against One Horn she helps target mobility rather than attempting to overpower a stronger Dalki head-on, and across the war she assigns creatures where they can reinforce other teams. Her limitations are visible against the highest-tier enemies: a demon-tier beast resists her taming, One Horn requires a group plan, and Graham kills her before tactical control can offset his speed and strength. (Chapters 775–795, 1297, 1494–1511, and 1563)
Relationships
- Richard Eno: Eno rescues Mona during the demon-tier disaster because he considers her power necessary, then entrusts her with directions to his facility. Mona cooperates with his plans while continuing to question why he helps humanity. (Chapters 795, 1247–1257, and 1312–1324)
- Logan: Mona helps Logan investigate his parents' deaths and Eno's connection to them, combining Bree information with genuine concern for a young man left alone. They later travel together to Eno's laboratory. (Chapters 597–598 and 1312–1324)
- Quinn: Mona becomes a reliable member of Quinn's coalition. He trusts her with the demon-tier amulet and with marked creatures, and later remembers her as one of the people who sacrificed herself in the struggle against the Dalki. (Chapters 1247–1313, 1413, and 1563–1565)
- Oscar and Samantha: Mona fights beside both leaders against One Horn. After Oscar dies, she pushes Samantha to lead on the basis of present responsibility rather than allow grief and his final wishes to paralyse the survivors. (Chapters 1494–1511)
- Graham: Graham's overwhelming speed and strength bypass Mona's creatures and equipment, killing her during the last Dalki campaign. (Chapters 1563–1565)
Items
Mona has no configured inventory item with a generated article. The demon-tier amulet is a temporary loan from Quinn, and her various beast weapons are described in combat without a separately configured item page.
