Mike

Mike is the oldest and most experienced general at Paul's military base. As head of communications, he coordinates other bases and joint operations, assumes responsibility for the base during Paul's absences, and leads its students through the Inter-Base Tournament. (Chapters 141–379)

Biography

Holding the base together

Mike serves alongside Nathan and Duke, with responsibility for communication between military bases and for planning joint exercises or missions. His age and experience make him well respected even without the highest formal rank. When Nathan and Duke nearly fight over the handling of students, Mike physically places himself between them and threatens to withhold both his own healing and access to his niece Hayley, using personal authority to stop an internal dispute before it becomes an injury. (Chapters 141 and 198)

Because Paul frequently leaves on expeditions, Mike becomes the officer primarily responsible for the base and its soldiers, while Nathan and Duke concentrate on the school. That distribution makes Mike a practical acting commander rather than merely a messenger. By Chapter 379 he is occupied leading the wider city and army, which also means Nathan cannot turn to him for immediate help with a suspected student expedition. The corpus does not record Mike's role or fate during the later wars. (Chapters 276 and 379)

Leading the Inter-Base Tournament delegation

Mike oversees preparations for the Inter-Base Tournament and has ultimate authority over the students travelling from his base. He assembles the participants with a voice that carries across the crowd, escorts them through the controlled transport process, and issues the instructions after arrival. His terse “good night” after demanding attention and his later apology before repeating the hooded transport procedure show a commander who combines strict control with dry humour and awareness of the students' discomfort. (Chapters 198 and 289–292)

When the delegation returns, Mike again gathers the students and apologises for subjecting them to the same security method. The event establishes his reliability in inter-base logistics, but the source does not credit him with selecting winners, fighting in the tournament, or uncovering the conspiracies around it. (Chapter 342)

Appearance and personality

Mike is repeatedly described as the oldest general and is addressed as “Old General Mike.” His exact hair, eyes, height, build, and uniform details are not supplied. He has a booming voice and a calm, respected presence. Rather than match Nathan and Duke's anger, he separates them, invokes consequences, and returns attention to their duties; with students, he is commanding but capable of understated humour and apology. (Chapters 141, 198, and 289–292)

Powers and abilities

Healing

Mike states that he can heal injuries and threatens not to heal Nathan or Duke if they fight. This establishes a healing capability but not its mechanism: the corpus does not show him treating a wound, identify an ability level, or give range, speed, resource cost, eligible injuries, or limits. Hayley is mentioned separately as another person the generals might seek, so her medical expertise is not attributed to Mike. (Chapter 141)

Command and military coordination

Mike's most developed competence is organisational. He coordinates communications among bases, plans joint exercises and missions, assumes command of the base when Paul is absent, and directs a large tournament delegation through selection assembly and secure transport. These are professional skills rather than supernatural powers, and the source does not show him in direct combat. (Chapters 141, 198, 276, and 289–342)

Relationships

  • Paul: Paul relies on Mike to prepare inter-base events and to run the base and soldiers during his frequent expeditions. (Chapters 198 and 276)
  • Nathan and Duke: Mike is the experienced mediator between the two school heads. He prevents their argument from becoming a fight and later leaves the school chiefly under their management while he handles the base. (Chapters 141 and 276)
  • Hayley: Hayley is Mike's niece. He invokes both his healing and hers to discourage Nathan and Duke from injuring each other, but the corpus gives no further family history. (Chapter 141)
