Ham
Ham is Fex's contracted familiar, a small flying bull whose scouting and communication repeatedly connect Fex to events beyond his immediate reach. Though boastful and easily frightened, Ham remains loyal through Fex's berserk episodes, captivity, and the Familiar World crisis. (Chapters 139–265, 569, 847–908, and 1470–1509)
Biography
Scouting for Fex
Ham first accompanies Fex through the vampire settlement and serves as his airborne lookout. After Fex reaches the human world, Ham introduces himself enthusiastically to Quinn's group and follows his master during the portal expedition. Fex orders him to retreat if the fight goes wrong, and Ham obeys with visible sadness when Fex loses control, preserving the familiar who can later guide others back to him. (Chapters 139–140, 245–256)
Ham then tracks the students and Travellers from high above the dark settlement. His small silhouette stays beyond their lights while his eyesight lets him follow them, giving Fex information without revealing their position. The role establishes that Ham's practical value is reconnaissance rather than direct force. (Chapters 264–265)
Messenger through the Familiar World
Fex later sends Ham on important errands and entrusts him with directions and reports. When Fex returns without his memories, Ham explains who he is—after briefly claiming to be Fex's master as a joke—and tries to restore the missing context. During another crisis Ham reaches the vampire settlement overheated and unconscious, but wakes and supplies the information that lets Quinn and Silver locate Fex. (Chapters 569, 847, and 852–864)
The Boneclaw temporarily shares Ham's body and uses him as a communication bridge. Ham relays the king's request to Fex, crosses into the Familiar World, and fears that opening a path will consume his limited energy and kill him. He survives the transfer and celebrates when the Boneclaw leaves him, while continuing to translate between familiars and their human or vampire partners. (Chapters 903 and 907–908)
Reunion and final recorded service
After a long separation Ham clings to Fex and worries that his increasingly powerful master has forgotten him. Fex reassures him and keeps using his ability to understand other familiars. Ham's last recorded act is translating a horse familiar's warning that an ongoing process requires the group to hold an airborne enemy in one area. He is alive at that point, but the corpus does not show his later fate or whether his contract with Fex persists indefinitely. (Chapters 1470 and 1509)
Appearance and personality
Ham is a small bull with bat-like wings, a ring through his nose, and enough expressive mobility to circle in the air, kneel, or cling to Fex's face. He angrily corrects anyone who mistakes him for a pig; his name came from that original misunderstanding. The corpus does not give his colouring, exact size, or age. (Chapters 245, 847, and 1470)
He is theatrical, talkative, and proud of his supposed strength, but readily panics when his energy or life is threatened. Beneath the comedy he is loyal: Ham scouts dangerous areas, returns with warnings, mourns Fex's loss of control, and fears abandonment when they spend too long apart. (Chapters 245–265, 569, 847, 907, and 1470)
Powers and abilities
Flight, senses, and scouting
Ham's wings allow sustained hovering, high-altitude surveillance, and rapid travel between groups. His eyesight can follow people in darkness from beyond the reach of their lights. His small body helps him remain unnoticed, but the corpus gives no speed, carrying capacity, or demonstrated offensive strike. (Chapters 245–265)
Familiar communication
Ham communicates verbally and through the mental connection with Fex. He can understand other familiars and relay their messages, including information from the Boneclaw and the horse familiar. This makes him an interpreter rather than a controller: he reports their intentions but does not compel them. (Chapters 903, 908, and 1509)
Ham can be summoned through Fex's contract and returned from a linked earring, but remaining manifested and supporting Familiar World travel consume energy. He explicitly warns that losing all his energy would kill him, and after a long journey he reaches the settlement feverishly hot, sweating, and unconscious. The exact energy reserve, recovery rate, and summoning distance are unknown. (Chapters 852–857 and 907–908)
Boneclaw vessel
The Boneclaw can inhabit or communicate through Ham, allowing its intentions to reach Fex and helping bridge the Human and Familiar Worlds. This association affects Ham—its departure coincides with his relief and recovery—but it is the Boneclaw's action, not evidence that Ham possesses portal creation or the king's combat powers himself. (Chapters 857 and 903–908)
Relationships
- Fex: Fex is Ham's contractor and master. Ham scouts, warns, and translates for him, while fearing that separation and Fex's growth will make him unnecessary.
- Quinn: Quinn recognises and cares for Ham when the familiar returns injured, then follows the directions Ham provides to reach Fex.
- Silver: Silver watches over the unconscious Ham and uses his report to help organise the search for her brother.
- Boneclaw: The Boneclaw temporarily uses Ham as a vessel and messenger. Ham respects its power but is relieved when it no longer occupies him.
Items
No manifest-configured inventory item is assigned to Ham. The summoning earring belongs to Fex rather than to the familiar.
