Grim

Grim is the former head of the Graylash family and Owen's grandfather. Captivity leaves him physically diminished but does not erase either his lightning mastery or his refusal to harm innocents, and after his rescue he becomes an experienced fighter and tactical adviser to Owen's alliance. (Chapters 1198–1309 and 1390–1555)

Biography

Captivity and return to the Graylash family

Grim is held with Blade children and rejects the idea of buying safety by attacking them, preferring to fight their captors. He is in poor condition when freed, yet contact with him gives Sil access to a powerful Graylash lightning ability. Owen's reunion with his grandfather restores both a family bond and a strategic asset that Owen values above a Demon-tier weapon. (Chapters 1198–1250)

Fighting and advising beside Owen

Despite the effects of captivity, Grim returns to combat and moves with Owen using lightning-coated feet. He helps confront Green Horn, supports Owen's decisions, and later attends the world leadership meeting where his reputation attracts attention. In the Board contest he adapts practically—using electricity to keep himself awake against gas—while discovering that glass can insulate opponents from his lightning. (Chapters 1308–1309 and 1390–1449)

Grim later divides Graylash forces and uses experience to reorganise mixed groups around complementary abilities. The New Gen attack still overwhelms them, killing allies and forcing a retreat until reinforcements arrive; tactical knowledge reduces chaos but cannot erase the enemy's advantage. Grim returns to the settlement with Owen alive, and the corpus does not state his later fate. (Chapters 1495–1555)

Appearance and personality

Grim is an old man whose captivity leaves him visibly weak and out of condition. He nevertheless retains authority, resolve, and a practical commander's temperament. His refusal to attack captive children establishes a moral limit, while his later responses to gas, insulating glass, and a collapsing formation show a preference for adaptation over pride. (Chapters 1198–1250 and 1437–1527)

Powers and abilities

Advanced Graylash lightning

Grim is described as a stronger lightning user than Owen's father. He can coat his feet for rapid movement, envelop his body in electricity, project powerful lightning, and incorporate the element into close combat. He also uses controlled current on himself to resist sleep-inducing gas. His power remains formidable after captivity, although age and poor physical condition limit the body supporting it. (Chapters 1234–1250, 1308–1309, and 1441–1449)

The ability is not universal: insulating glass prevents his electricity from reaching protected targets, and high-tier Dalki or coordinated New Gen fighters can pressure the user despite the lightning. The corpus does not describe Grim acquiring a new stage after these battles; he remains an experienced natural Graylash user when last shown. (Chapters 1448–1451 and 1526–1555)

Command and tactical analysis

Grim reads combat formations and reorganises fighters by how their abilities interact, a skill developed through leadership rather than a supernatural power. His plan improves coordination but still suffers major casualties against opponents whose strength and preparation exceed the available forces. (Chapters 1495–1533)

Relationships

  • Owen: Grim is Owen's grandfather, predecessor, adviser, and battlefield ally. Owen values his return as both family restoration and the recovery of the Graylash tradition's most experienced living representative. (Chapters 1249–1555)
  • Sil: Grim protects Blade children during captivity, and Sil later copies lightning through contact with him. The copied power remains Sil's use of Grim's ability, not evidence that the two share an identity. (Chapters 1198–1237)
  • Quinn: Grim joins the wider alliance in which Quinn is a leading figure, but the corpus gives them less direct personal development than Grim's bond with Owen. (Chapters 1390–1555)
