Derik

Derik is the vice-captain of Hannah's Red Vampire squad. Suspicious of the exceptionally powerful vampires travelling beside him and driven by hatred of Dhampirs, he secretly attacks Jessica; the choice brings Quinn to the scene and ends in Derik's death. (Chapters 1615–1658)

Biography

Recruitment and growing suspicion

Derik enters the Vampire Corps assessment as Hannah's outspoken second-in-command and defeats three Corps members, boasting that he could take four. During the base attack he questions whether remaining is worth the risk and begins viewing Quinn's group as either valuable allies or a threat that should be reported. Believing Hannah's judgment has become compromised, he contacts Red Vampire leadership without her knowledge. (Chapters 1615–1632)

Attack on Jessica and death

Derik later moves against Jessica when stronger members of her group are absent. He knows Hannah would reject the plan, so he acts independently, uses another person as cover, and attacks after seeing Jessica's Dhampir eye. Hannah's own hatred draws her into the fight, but Derik remains the instigator and repeatedly strikes Jessica until Minny intervenes. (Chapters 1637–1640)

Quinn arrives through Minny's shadow link and responds with prolonged punishment: he breaks Derik's body, feeds him blood so it heals, and repeats the cycle before using Shadow Eater and killing him. Hannah later condemns the severity, though she also concludes that Derik had likely provoked the incident. Derik's death is therefore both a consequence of his unauthorised attack and an example of Quinn's rage exceeding what even an ally considers proportionate. (Chapters 1641–1658)

Appearance and personality

Derik has the strength, speed, healing, blood aura, and senses of a capable Red Vampire officer. His personal ability makes his punches stronger with successive hits, letting later blows rupture Jessica internally and threatening lethal force if the sequence continues.
