Berg

Berg Sunshield is a talented academy student from one of the Big Four families whose pride in the Sunshield flame makes him hostile toward outsiders who display it. After the Sunshield family's collapse, he reappears as a displaced young adult training for revenge without a target and joins an Earthborn Demon-tier beast expedition. (Chapters 116–160 and 1518–1522)

Biography

Sunshield prodigy at the academy

Berg leads one of the most successful groups during the Winged Lizard hunt, burning beasts efficiently but consuming enough MC cells to require rest. When he sees Vorden's body use the family flame, he assumes the secret must be suppressed and attacks. Sil's threatening response and the Blade family's reputation frighten him into surrendering his group's crystals and later giving Vorden access to copy the ability again. (Chapters 116–153)

Berg investigates the Blades but finds almost no public information, deepening his caution rather than resolving the conflict. At the academy he remains recognised as a level-eight user and one of the strongest students, though his advice to Quinn about entrenched bullying reflects the perspective of someone protected by a powerful family rather than Quinn's situation. (Chapters 160–373)

A survivor without a target

Years later, the Sunshield family has been disbanded and largely destroyed. Berg admits that he knew the Blades were a threat and went into hiding, then trained to avenge his family; learning that the responsible Blade was already dead leaves him unsure what purpose remains. He enters Earthborn recruitment, overwhelms the test soldier, and is assigned with Erin to a special Demon-tier hunting team. (Chapters 1518–1520)

Berg's fire protects him from the volcanic region and lets him return enemy fireballs, while his alertness makes him the witness when Conan tries to steal Erin's sword and is frozen. He confirms Erin did not deliberately kill the man, helping the expedition continue with its trust intact. Berg is alive when the group proceeds toward the beast, but the corpus does not supply his later outcome. (Chapters 1521–1522)

Appearance and personality

Berg is red-haired and appears teenage at the academy; at nineteen he wears a sleeveless shirt and no visible beast gear during Earthborn recruitment. He is proud of the Sunshield name but later ashamed of his own fear and secrecy. His early hostility is rooted in guarding family power, while the loss of that family leaves him more candid, uncertain, and capable of helping a former school rival without demanding advantage. Sunshield flame ability

Berg is a level-eight fire user. He projects flame from his palms and elbows, burns several Winged Lizards at once, propels himself for bursts of speed, and adds rotational acceleration to physical strikes. In the volcanic expedition, ordinary fireballs do little harm to him and can be struck back at attacking beasts. These effects derive from the Sunshield ability rather than beast equipment. (Chapters 116–120, 153–214, and 1518–1521)

Heavy use consumes MC cells and forces Berg to rest. His early combat also shows that foresight and raw fire do not solve an opponent who can copy multiple abilities or exert overwhelming pressure. The corpus does not show his later tribal flame markings, a soul weapon, or a new ability stage; the enhanced Sunshield display in the tournament belongs to another family user unless explicitly stated otherwise. Relationships

• Vorden: Berg attacks after seeing Vorden's body use the family flame, then yields when confronted with the Blade threat. Vorden copies Berg's fire on later contact. (Chapters 118–172)
• Erin: Berg once regards Erin as an academy rival. When they meet after their families and affiliations have changed, he joins her expedition and becomes the witness who clears her of deliberately killing Conan. (Chapters 1518–1522)
• Quinn: Berg's brief advice about school bullying remains in Quinn's memory as an example of how differently protected students understand the academy hierarchy. (Chapter 373)
