Ashley

Ashley is Paul's lieutenant and the first of Paul's imprisoned soldiers to volunteer for conversion into a vampire. He becomes second-in-command and later commander of the Vampire Soldiers, preserving military discipline through the vampire settlement's wars and Paul's death. Centuries of loss and resentment eventually lead him to the Red Vampires, though his opposition to rank-based killing helps trigger resistance against Laxmus. This commander is unrelated to Ashley Young, the woman mentioned in Chapter 445. (Chapters 842–877, 1364–1407, and 1651–1796)

Biography

Captivity, conversion, and service under Paul

Ashley acts as lieutenant while two hundred captured humans are marched through the vampire settlement. He keeps the frightened soldiers organised without giving them false assurances, attempts to protect a woman from a vampire despite having no equipment, and restores formation as soon as Paul appears. When conversion becomes the only route away from imprisonment and likely death, Ashley volunteers to be the first member of Paul's chosen ten to undergo the process. He becomes a vampire or halfling successfully; later chapters consistently identify him as a turned vampire. (Chapters 842–843)

Paul makes Ashley second-in-command of his trusted squad and places him over detachments at the settlement gates. Ashley obeys orders not to abandon an unattacked post during the eighth-family crisis, keeping his group intact, then reports the survivors and the strange red crystals left by the dead. His value is less independent strategy than dependable command: Paul repeatedly delegates guard, administrative, and field duties to him. (Chapters 877–901, 940, and 1185)

As captain of the vampire group, Ashley investigates disappearances from the pooling area with Ben and Ghost. He maintains the list of missing residents, proposes interviewing neighbours, hears an approaching vampire before the others, and draws a standard sword, although Muka stops his strike easily. Taking command after Paul's death

Ashley remains beside Paul during the later settlement conflict and hears his final words. Paul's death leaves him and the Vampire Soldiers grieving, without a clear duty, and uncertain whether they can return to human families while dependent on blood. Ashley immediately imposes order, organises Paul's funeral, and escorts the exhausted Quinn through the crowd. Red Vampire radicalisation and resistance to Laxmus

Across the long interval after the wars, human persecution of vampires reaches Ashley's own family. Their deaths and Quinn's failure to find a way to reverse the soldiers' turning harden Ashley into believing that converting everyone would end the division. He joins the Red Vampires and serves as a Guardian under Laxmus, telling Peter that humans' cruelty—not forgetfulness about having been human—produced his choice. Peter defeats him but spares him because of his history with Quinn. (Chapters 1741 and 1752)

Ashley later questions Laxmus's faction from within. When another Guardian casually kills a lower-ranked Red Vampire, Ashley returns the body to the victim's daughter and declares that a life cannot be valued by rank. He attacks with a hardened blood-aura claw, fights the Guardian evenly, and remembers that Laxmus killed Paul; the confrontation ignites wider infighting. Although Ashley worries that his action caused the collapse, he survives the battle and remains with Layla's community after Laxmus dies. Appearance and personality

Ashley is an adult male soldier. Centuries later he looks older and more rugged but retains a strong, powerful build; his eyes have become duller, reflecting the losses behind his change in allegiance. He is disciplined, candid about danger, and protective of people under his command. Grief makes him susceptible to a universal-conversion ideology, but not indifferent to individual life: seeing rank used to excuse murder brings his military sense of shared responsibility back to the surface. After Laxmus's fall he is embarrassed rather than defiant about his former identity, suggesting regret without a complete narrated reconciliation. (Chapters 842–843, 1741, and 1776–1796)

Turned-vampire physiology and blood combat

Ashley's conversion gives him vampire strength, speed, senses, fangs, healing, and blood aura. He hears a rapid approach before his companions, recovers from severe wounds, shapes hardened blood aura around an arm into a blade or claw, and can fight a Red Vampire Guardian evenly. His healing slows after sustained injury, and Peter's celestial-strength blows overwhelm him despite armour and shadow defence. Soldiering and command

Ashley was already Paul's lieutenant before turning. Formation discipline, morale management, guard procedure, patrol delegation, and battlefield coordination remain his most consistent abilities after conversion. He leads small gate detachments, maintains investigative records, organises the Vampire Soldiers after Paul's death, and integrates them into later campaigns and the Vampire Corps. Finite shadow reserve

As a Red Vampire Guardian, Ashley gains access to Laxmus-derived shadow through an external crystal reserve rather than awakening an innate shadow ability. He uses it to jam Peter's tail, form a wall, move faster than Quinn's older version, and combine shadow with blood aura into wings that slow a fall. Stored shadow can block or slow attacks and also slows the user's ageing, explaining Ashley's survival across the long interval. (Chapters 1741 and 1794)

The reserve is finite: it does not regenerate like MC cells and depletes with use. When Laxmus calls the distributed shadow back, Ashley says he cannot use the shadow himself and the power leaves the Guardians or their crystals. After Laxmus's death the remaining stored quantity cannot be refilled.
