Xander

Xander is a vampire who grows from the first family's highest-ranked student into a dependable member of the tenth family and, centuries later, one of Layla's closest allies among the Red Vampires. His strength begins without a learned family ability; his later career adds the tenth family's mist and a separately acquired shadow power. (Chapters 355, 705–708, 1774–1792, and 2523)

Biography

The first family's top student

Xander enters the story as Phil's best student and a first-family candidate expected to learn its ability. Bryce uses him to test the captive Peter, and Xander demonstrates the speed, strength, and persistence of a talented young vampire despite having no ability at the time. Peter eventually breaks both of his fists and defeats him, making Xander an early measure of Peter's abnormal durability rather than a peer who can overpower him. (Chapters 355–356 and 435)

The crisis surrounding Fex and the Punisher changes Xander's allegiance. He and Amy become friends with Quinn's companions, help them survive the settlement, and join the tenth family instead of remaining under the expectations attached to the first. Xander initially refuses an inner-circle commitment because it would affect his whole family and because the tenth still has the settlement's worst reputation. Even so, the move relieves the pressure to prove himself worthy of the first family's ability, leaving him calmer and less inclined to provoke needless fights. (Chapters 466–528 and 705–708)

Service in the tenth family

At the reopened vampire school, Xander remains confident enough to call himself the best student even without an ability, but he increasingly uses that standing to support others. He teams with Amy, Timmy, and Erin, helps introduce new arrivals to the tenth castle, and stays when attacks reduce the inner family to a small core. During the bloodsucker assault, Paul entrusts him, Amy, and Timmy with command of separate groups at the north gate and authority to redirect support as conditions change. That responsibility continues after the immediate crisis. Xander helps administer the family, reports the first family's suspicious surveillance and the disappearance of tenth-family members, and carries out battlefield logistics during the Dalki war. When Quinn's coalition travels to the Dalki world, Xander brings a hundred vampires he personally trusts while leaving Timmy to maintain the family, showing that his commitment has become active service rather than reluctant registration. Layla's ally among the Red Vampires

Over the following millennium, Xander becomes a father to June and Kev and serves as a Guardian within the Red Vampires. He and Layla do not simply accept Laxmus: they develop contingencies against him, and Xander gains shadow power independently of Laxmus. When Layla steals a Nest crystal to save the wounded Vincent, Xander uses shadow space to carry Vincent, recognises that returning to the laboratory is dangerous, and nevertheless goes back because they lack another way to learn how to use the crystal. Layla orders Xander to escape with the crystal when Laxmus confronts them. Xander obeys because remaining would waste her effort, then resists the Guardians sent to retrieve him. June and Kev join him, revealing that his repeated preparation for this day has made them capable allies rather than dependants. Xander's mist keeps all three alive against superior numbers until Quinn's returning companions intervene; afterward he protects the defeated Ni with his own shadow and helps carry the exhausted Layla to safety. Settlement elder and final defence

Once the Red Vampire conflict ends, Xander remains part of the wider vampire leadership circle. He becomes familiar enough with Quinn's family for Minny to call him “Uncle Xander,” yet the later mass alteration of memory makes him reject Quinn's claims and defend the official account until the deception is exposed. His response reflects loyalty to the community as he understands it, not conscious betrayal of Quinn. (Chapters 1986 and 2104–2107)

Xander later appears beside Muka, Andy, and Jessica at a vampire event and remains active when Immortui's forces attack. His latest recorded action is leaving the settlement to contact the Graylash family and Vampire Corps for aid while divine beings and werewolves assault the vampires. Appearance and personality

As a student, Xander is exceptionally handsome even by vampire standards, with brown hair curled on both sides and the athletic frame of a trained fighter. He retains a youthful appearance through the later era, as expected of a vampire, although the corpus does not provide a detailed later redesign. (Chapter 355)

Xander begins proud and burdened by the first family's expectations. Life in the tenth family makes him calmer, while experience turns his confidence into protective responsibility. He is cautious enough to recognise traps and retreat when staying cannot help, but loyal enough to return to dangerous ground for Layla, Vincent, his children, and the settlement. Powers and abilities

Vampire physiology and blood aura

Even before learning an ability, Xander is the academy's top ordinary student. His vampire body gives him speed, strength, senses, and recovery beyond an ordinary human, and his later combat includes standard blood-aura slashes and projectiles. That baseline is formidable against students and soldiers but insufficient against exceptional beings such as Peter or groups of Guardian-class vampires. (Chapters 355–356, 435, and 1775–1777)

Mist ability

The mist ability originates with the tenth leader's knight and is taught within the tenth family. Xander initially delays accepting Edward's offer but has mastered it by the later era. He can turn his body into mist, spread the mist around allies, obscure their true positions, and create misleading glimpses that let them attack from unexpected angles. (Chapters 705 and 1775–1777)

Mist is defensive and deceptive rather than invulnerable. Coordinated enemies can attack the entire cloud, forcing Xander to spend more MC cells to maintain it, and opponents familiar with the ability can wait for exhaustion. The corpus does not identify the exact chapter in which he finally learns it or establish a maximum area. (Chapter 1777)

Shadow power

Xander later gains a shadow power through preparations made against Laxmus, explicitly stating that Laxmus did not give it to him. Using a shadow crystal, he can shroud a person, store an injured body in a space where the flow of time is slower, and conceal or protect a target. This allows him to preserve Vincent's condition and later hide Ni from the Red Vampires. (Chapters 1763–1775 and 1792)

The crystal's energy visibly dims with use. Xander cannot freely use the shadow while low on power or while depending on the space to hold Vincent, and he treats it as a limited contingency rather than his primary fighting style. Command and field experience

Xander has centuries of experience training vampires, managing family duties, selecting trusted forces, and judging when a retreat preserves the mission. Relationships

• Layla: Xander is one of Layla's principal confidants within the Red Vampires. He follows her against Laxmus, carries Vincent for her, and protects her after the battle.
• Peter: Xander defeats neither Peter's durability nor his later strength, but their first school fight becomes a long-running joke. Peter later helps save Xander and his children.
• Timmy: Timmy and Xander grow from classmates into the practical administrators and field leaders of the tenth family.
• June and Kev: Xander trains his daughter and son for the danger surrounding the Red Vampires. They choose to fight beside him when that danger arrives.
• Vincent: Xander risks exposure to preserve Vincent in shadow space and helps deliver him and a Nest crystal to Logan for treatment.
