The Mysterious Net, also called the Xuantian Spirit-Sealing Formation, Xuantian Spirit Locking Formation, or Heavenly Net, is a distributed formation weapon that can extend across Xuanhuang. The ledger's first appearance follows the early terminology in Chapter 198, but the realized formation manifests later; the similarly named Heavenly Net Divine Art should not be treated as a hand-held version of the system.

History

From Spirit Locking to Spirit Sealing

Early manifestations appear as green energy or transparent runes that form a net. Gongsun Qixuan draws out its energy during a deduction, and Lu Xichan contains it. During war, attempts to record the unrecordable green power allow it to trace the recording medium and destroy the observers, apparently killing Sima Changkong and his blood-split bodies. (Chapters 463 and 565–566)

The Five Elders identify it as an ancient Xuantian Spirit-Sealing Formation recreated by the Alliance. Later exposition says the Mysterious Net was built on the Tianxuan Spirit-Locking Formation and evolved into the more aggressive Spirit-Sealing form. The text entertains distinctions involving bestowal, revocation, and heavenly authority, but does not settle every translation or whether all names always denote precisely the same operating mode. (Chapters 567–568, 697, and 739)

The net descends and replaces heaven

Centered on the Tianxuan Mirror, the system grows increasingly capable of severing beings from heaven and earth. It completely suppresses Crimson Flame, a Spirit of Heaven and Earth, and partial force can be summoned through distributed mirror terminals. In one timeline compulsory study of the Records of Mending Heaven helps the Tianxuan Mirror transform into the Mysterious Net and replace heaven itself. (Chapters 630, 647, 697, and 915)

Control remains politically and metaphysically contested. Ruling Dharma Transmitters use Spirit-Sealing constraints to compel the Tianxuan Mirror, but Mo Rubin explains that commands do not equal complete mastery of an intelligent Xuantian Treasure Mirror without the Xuantian King's authority. In Li Fan's 114th life, the completed net visibly envelops Xuanhuang. (Chapters 945–965 and 1290)

Countermeasures and later reconstructions

Once its formation diagram leaks, the Five Elders devise a red protective glow that resists it. Endstone-derived concealment blocks its detection, while Heaven-Rending Arrow attacks can damage or distort sections of the net and the Heavenly Dao it mediates. These are specialized counters rather than proof that the entire system is easily destroyed. (Chapters 571, 708, 1034, 1057, and 1387)

Li Fan later uses the Final Dissociation Disc to derive a weaker related formation. That reconstruction lacks the Tianxuan Mirror, the critical core of the full formation, so knowledge of its diagrams and the ability to reproduce part of its logic do not give him physical possession of a portable Mysterious Net. (Chapters 837–839)

Description and function

The Mysterious Net appears as green, often transparent formation energy spreading in runes or a vast net. It is infrastructure: a heaven-spanning surveillance, suppression, and attack system centered on the Tianxuan Mirror and accessed through formation nodes or smaller mirrors. It is not personal armor, a bagged artifact, or a single weapon that one cultivator carries. (Chapters 463, 647, 697, and 1290)

Abilities and limitations

Heavenly surveillance and tracing

The net detects targets across its covered territory and can follow an attempted record back through its medium, destroying the recorder and linked bodies. Calamity Stone concealment and related Endstone barriers create blind spots, proving that its perception is extensive but not absolute. (Chapters 565–566 and 708)

Spirit locking, sealing, and suppression

Its formations constrain spiritual power and can sever the link between a Spirit of Heaven and Earth and its environment. This lets it suppress Crimson Flame utterly. The distinction between locking and sealing describes an evolution or operating emphasis, but the source leaves some terminology interpretive rather than providing a complete technical specification. (Chapters 567–568, 647, 697, and 739)

Distributed heavenly authority

Handheld Tianxuan mirrors can call down portions of the formation, and the completed system can span Xuanhuang and mediate bestowal or revocation. That scale depends on the intelligent Tianxuan core and Alliance infrastructure. Dharma-Transmitter commands can constrain the core, yet the text explicitly denies that this amounts to uncomplicated total control. (Chapters 630, 697, 945–965, and 1290)

Formation defenses and known counters

The system can attack, seal, and defend over enormous ranges, but its leaked diagram enables Five Elders countermeasures. Endstone plates conceal areas from it, and Heaven-Rending weapons damage its heavenly-law network. Li Fan's copy is weaker because it lacks the Tianxuan Mirror, showing that the core cannot be replaced by diagrams alone. (Chapters 571, 708, 837–839, 1057, and 1387)
